THE LINK NEWSLETTER
SANDFORD - ON - THAMES
Issue no.3October 1998

1. Comment

You will have read my comments in the last issue of the Link regarding travellers and the problems their presence brings. To some extent this has been lessened, however, it would be foolish to believe that it is no longer a concern. As I write they are still resident within the parish boundaries on two sites and I would want to assure the village that the Parish Council is looking further at what it can do in this situation. At present the council as little or no authority to deal directly with the problem but we are looking at developing a middle to long term strategy in eliminating this problem and we will continue to keep you advised of developments.

2. Women's Institute

The WI coffee morning went so well that the WI have now arranged for a 'Friendship Meeting' to be held at the village hall on Monday 19th October at 7.30pm. It promises to be an interesting evening with a talk being given about the origins and history of the WI, followed by a discussion on the future prospects of a revived WI branch in Sandford. Refreshments will be available and a demonstration of Parchment Craft will be given.
If you'd like further details please contact Joan Inston on 715788.

3. St Andrew's Church Notices

Pitson Memorial: the new sconces will be dedicated at the 10am. service on the 22nd November by the Sub-Dean of Christ Church Cathedral from which parts of the memorial have been donated. Friends of the late Charlie and Elsie Pitson are especially invited to join the congregation for the dedication.
Advent Bible Group: This will be held on four Tuesdays, 24th November and the 1st, 8th and 15th of December and the Gospel according to St Mathew will be studied. The meeting will start at 7.30pm. and be held in the Church Room (by the tower). All are welcome.
Harvest Lunch: This was a great success with a good turnout. Anyone who did not manage to make it I'm afraid you've got another year to wait, when it's hoped another great day like this can be enjoyed.

4. Village Maintenance/Improvements

The Parish Council takes seriously its responsibility for maintaining and improving the quality of the facilities in the village. To this end there are plans in the pipe line for money to be spent on improving the facilities for children in the recreation ground, subject to the approval of local residents and I will advise you further of this in due course.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who give up their free time to help maintain the village. If you have any spare time would like to use it in helping the local community please contact Mike Inston on 715788.

5. Skip Provision

Good news for the residents on the Park Homes site! Following the recent withdrawal of a skip from the site arrangements have now been made for future skips to be located on the slip road outside the site. Skips will of course continue to be sited in the village hall car park. The dates for these are as follows:
Village Hall Car Park-weekend 4/12/98
Park Homes-weekend 22/1/99.

6. Millennium

The year 2000 approaches ever nearer and as yet no concrete decisions have been made regarding its celebration within the village. The number of suggestions submitted thus far has been minimal and it is essential that if the Parish Council it to make the arrangements that plenty of time is given for these to be made. A plea therefore for your ideas to be passed to any Parish Councillor so that the village can celebrate the new century in style. A plea also for anybody willing to get involved in arranging millennium events to contact Mike Inston on the number above, as quickly as possible.

8. 7a Henley Road Development

Villagers will be aware that this site has been awaiting development for some time and is now beginning to look derelict. The delay is in part due to the objections of the Parish Council to planning applications submitted. Although approving the development of the site in principle the Council is determined that the nature of any such development is in keeping with the existing character of the village, hence the delay. Continuing representations to SODC are being made and it is hoped that this matter will be resolved in the near future.

9. Village Bus Services

The council have been advised that the 105 Reading Bus will cease at the end of the month. At the time of going to press it is not known who will take over the running of the replacement service. Approaches have been made to both the Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Company regarding their proposals, if any, for running a service to Sandford, but as yet no decision appears to have been made. Residents however should be aware that the Parish Council is doing its utmost to ensure that an equivalent, if not better, service replaces that of the existing one.
