SANDFORD - ON - THAMES
MAGAZINE

July 1998 ISSUE No.2

1. Editorial.

Once again the village has suffered the presence of travellers. Thankfully they are now gone and their mess has been cleared up. Some people give support to alternative lifestyles but in any society, freedom and rights bring responsibility. A lifestyle that promotes environmental damage, waste and a lack of respect for the local community is one that shows little, if any, responsibility.
Let us hope that they don't return.
Ray James.

2. Libraries.

Revised opening hours for Temple Cowley Library are:
Monday 9.15 - 7.00   ThursdayCLOSED
Tuesday 9.30 - 1.30 Friday 9.30 - 5.00
Wednesday9.30 - 7.00 Saturday9.30 - 1.00

The mobile library calls at Sandford on alternate Tuesdays, the next visit will be on 28th July. It stops outside The Fox from 3.10 - 3.30pm and at Orchard House from 3.35 - 3.55pm.

3. Woman's Institute.

Are you a woman between 18 and 108? Then the WI could be for you. Sport, arts and crafts and friendship are just some of the many things the WI can offer you. If you are interested in becoming part of a new

branch of the WI in Sandford there's an informal meeting at the Village Hall on Tuesday 15th September at 12-2pm and 6.30-7.30pm. For more information contact Jean Inston on 715788.

4. Public Transport

Comment has been received by the Council regarding the poor quality of bus service. With the recent addition of the 16B, I believe the overall service has improved considerably. There is also a free bus going to Tesco twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday, leaving The Catherine Wheel at 10.00am.

5. Bus Tokens.

Many thanks to Gina Ashburner for her work in issuing travel tokens. It is much appreciated.

6. Parish Councillor Vacancy.

With the vacancy still unfilled there is the opportunity for someone to be co-opted onto the council. Interested persons should contact Mike Inston on 715788.

7. Flower Festival / Parish Fete.

Despite unpredictable weather the Flower Festival / Parish Fete was again a success. As a contribution to this the Parish Council took additional action to ensure that the grounds and immediate surroundings were neat and tidy for the event. A big thank you goes to all those who volunteered their time and helped out at the event.

8. Four Pillars Hotel.

It is always good to be able to report activities and initiatives between local businesses and the community. Local events at the Four Pillars Hotel include a veteran car rally and firework displays at conclusion of wedding. The hotel has undertaken to tidy up the boundary with Church Road and also improve the safety of the footpath.

9. Skips.

A skip will be available at the Village Hall car park for the weekend commencing Friday 24th July. The provision of a skip at Kiln Park is still being investigated.

10. Village Hall.

After long service James Gladwell and Phil Bunce have ended their time on the Village Hall Committee as Chairman and Treasurer respectively. They deserve much thanks for all the sterling work they have done for the village. The new Chairman is Richard Brown of 7 Rock Farm Lane. The new Treasurer is Paul Daglish.

11. Get On Your Bike!

Each year in September cyclists throughout Britain take to the road on behalf of the Historic Churches Trust. This year it will take place on Saturday 12th September. As usual a group of cyclists from Sandford will be taking part and you are invited to join them. The ride is fun, benefits a charity and for those of you (like me!) who aren't as fit as you'd like to be, lots of cyclists do a sponsored "walk" up the hills. Further information and sponsor forms can be obtained from Ray Lee on 771528.

12. Millennium Plans.

With the millennium now just 17 months away the council have been considering ways the village can celebrate. Suggestions made include a street party, fireworks, and more permanent ideas involving environmental schemes. It is important that all the villagers have a say in what they would like, so if you support any of these ideas or have any suggestions of your own, please contact the council clerk Liz Shatford, at The Old School, Church Road.

13. Reading Group.

AUNTIE
As seen on Pet Rescue,
a very old cat called Auntie.
Shot with an air gun pellet,
A bag of bones,
breathing laboured,
inside a malignant growth,
Disgrace, for a nation of animal lovers
The RSPCA brought in, Prosecution.
Humanely put to sleep,
No fur, a sad purr.
It's fate,
to keep losing weight.
No more fears,
just goodbye tears.
Not enough said,
too late now dead.
As seen on Pet Rescue,
a very old cat called Auntie.

Roger Phipps.

Roger, a local man, has had two collections of poetry published, which are available from him at 34 The Crescent. If you yourself are a budding writer, or just enjoy reading, you may be interested in plans to form an informal Reading Writing group, you can contact Ray or Clari on 395925.

Many thanks to Mike and Clari for their work in the production of this newsletter.
