HOLY WEEK AND EASTER
Lord Jesus, Christ,
the world's true sun,
ever rising, never setting,
whose life-giving warmth
engenders, preserves,
nourishes and gladdens
all things in heaven and earth:
Shine in my heart, I pray,
scatter the night of sin,
and the clouds of error.
Blaze within me,
that I may go my way without stumbling,
not as one who wanders in the dark
but all my life long
walking as one who knows the light.
Amen,
A prayer of Erasmus

Easter lilies
The March Link comes out in time for Easter, the season of Resurrection
and New Life, symbolized by the flowers of spring. Some people make
a gift to buy a lily for decorating the church, in memory of someone they
have lost - but not ultimately lost, only see no longer. Spring will be
specially sweet this year after a long and hard and 'flu' ridden winter, and
as the election gets close people will talk of a more hopeful future for this
country, whether with the present government or a new one.
The Lent
discussion groups on The Common Good, religion and political
responsibility, have been sharing different viewpoints. Some are
preparing for Easter by observing Lent, and non-regulars are also invited
to come in on the 6.30 concert-cum-service celebration in church on
Palm Sunday. That morning at the Parish Communion there is no
sermon, but Holy Week is launched by the distribution of palm crosses
and reading of the Passion.
Then on Maundy Thursday the solemnities
are entered with 7.30 p.m. Eucharist (in the same night that Jesus was
betrayed), leading into Good Friday. During the three hours Jesus spent
on the cross there will be private prayer in church at which people drop
in for a few minutes to remember what is happening, and the service will
be at 2.15 until 3 p.m. One thing religious practice teaches us is to
confront death with hope, to see the light in the darkness, and to let our
body rhythms move in harmony with the world - from winter to spring,
death to new life, sorrow to joy.
Love's redeeming work is done.
Fought the fight, the battle won.
Thee we greet triumphant now
Hail the Resurrection thou.

Village Hall. Extension?
The Rural Development Commission has made a grant of £9,000
towards the project. The County Council has added £6,000.
The National Lottery have turned us down once already. But we
need more local opinion about the desirability of this plan to
1) extend the kitchen, 2) add smaller rooms (with possibility of IT
provision), 3) add storage space, 4) disabled toilet, 5) bar area -
to make a facility with a wider range of use and provide a base
for developing local activities. Residents are invited to write
to the editor. At present it is all on hold pending further
opportunity to ascertain local opinion.

Television back in Sandford
No, not Inspector Morse. But some may have seen the BBC1
programme on Race Relations in October starring Tom and Jenny Fox
of Church Road showing how good it can be. There was then an article
in the Sunday Times on the 24th November about young black people
(referring to Sandford as 'a small Oxfordshire village' - watch it, Driscoll
- you're talking about the centre of the universe) with a nice picture of
Jenny, described as I.T. consultant - also Trevor McDonald and Lord
Taylor, so up there with the great and the good - keep it up, Jenny, when
your new baby Tamsin (and Charlotte!) leave you time.

W.I. Centenary 1897-1997
The Centenary of the foundation of the Women's Institute, in Canada,
on 19th February 1897, was celebrated nationally by the ringing of
church bells across the country on that day. In Sandford the bells of St
Andrew's were chimed at 2.30 p.m. in the presence of W.I. members
Mrs Joyce Leach and Mrs Joan Inston of Church Road, and Mrs Phyllis
Talbot who now lives at Eastern House, together with Mrs Jean Morgan,
President of the Littlemore Branch. The ladies expressed their thanks to
Mr A. Scarrott and Mr R. Clarke for their assistance in the ringing of the
bells, and to Rev. R. Morgan for permission to hold this ceremony at
our church.
The Sandford-on-Thames branch of the Women's Institute was
founded during the First World War by Mrs Challenor (Senior), but
regretfully had to cease activities in the 1970s, after which some
members linked up with the Littlemore branch.
Cross and Crescent
An interesting-looking day to introduce and explain the Muslim faith, at
the St Clements Family Centre, 19th April, 9.30 to 4.30, costs £6.
Details from Rev. David Wood-Robinson, 72 Divinity Road, Oxford.
Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings
A short while I was sitting in the doctor's waiting room when a young
woman came in with a little boy of about four years old. She sent him to
sit down while she held a conversation with the receptionist. He came
across and sat on the chair by me and after a while I had struck up a
conversation with him. In his hands he had a little grey plastic animal of
some sort. I asked what it was, and suggested it might be a dinosaur.
He held it out in his little hand and said 'it's a triceratops' and added
'that means it's three horned'. I was quite taken aback. We carried on
our conversation, and I asked if he had been to the Science Museum in
Parks Road to see the dinosaur there. Yes, he had, and I suspect others.
When his mother came, I said we had been talking about dinosaurs, and
she smiled and said 'have you looked at his hat?'. It had three horns on
it! As he toddled off with his mother, I was left with the impression that
little boy had an interest for the rest of his life.

Fostering and Adoption
Oxfordshire County Council Social Services Department are looking for
long-term foster carers and adopters for a number of children, most of
them between 3 and 13 years old. Some of them have special needs. All
of them need someone to come forward to offer them a permanent
home. They try in most cases to keep brothers and sisters together, so
they often need families who can take more than one child.
All sorts of people can become foster carers or adopters. You can
be married or single, age is no barrier and educational qualifications are
not required. All you need to start with are the qualities common to
every good parent. You will receive training and regular support. Foster
carers are paid generous allowances, which don't affect entitlement to
Income Support. Dependent on circumstances, some adoptive parents
can be given financial support too.
If you are interested in finding out more, contact the South Oxon
family placement team on 01865-341687.
Carers video
The North and West Oxfordshire Carers Centre have made a video
about caring, for anyone who looks after someone at home who is any
way disabled. It has been made by carers, and can be borrowed from
Christine Standbridge on Banbury 264545.
Depression, anxiety, stress
If you suffer from any of these, or have
other emotional problems that are
hard to cope with, three local groups
may be able to help. Acorn is an
Oxford Mind drop-in centre, with
groups for anxiety and depression or
someone to talk to in confidence - you
can ring them on 716633; Oasis is a
friendly and supportive women-only
centre in Cowley - ring Helen on
721472; or you can ring Oxford Mind on
511702, and they will help you to find the support you need.

The Quiz Night
There was again a full house with 17 teams of 6 (in principle) to a table,
and brilliant questions concocted by Tim James - who was awarded the
Sandford Rose Bowl for services to education at the end. The winners
(as usual since the demise of Black and Tans) were the Squad (92), but
the Anoraks thought they were morally superior having only 4 players
(Wils, Morrice, Dave, Alan) and still scoring 79. Norfolk and Chance
3rd with 74, Seven Up 72, lonians 70, Rock Farm Follies 68, Faggots
66.5, Terminators 66, Six of Best ditto, Goldies 61, 1901 52, Saracens
52, Village Idiots 49, No Hopers (true) 47, SuperJocks 47, Valentines
44. The Bar (34) had its mind on higher, more spiritual, things. Thanks
to Lin Brookings and Georgie for marking and keeping scores accurately,
to Sharon and her helpers for the food, to Gina for the Stawberry Vodka
(much appreciated by its consumer), to Tim for Cheery Brandy and all
others who gave raffle prizes and all those who won them but gave them
back for auction. £520 was raised and distributed to village
organisations - the Youth Club, Toddlers, Church Building, Lunch for
Disabled etc.

Emma Tasker, of Burra Close, a younger Link reader of 10.75 years
(your editor hasn't discovered how to do fractions yet), suggests that we
should include poetry from adults and children - any other offerings
would be very welcome. Thanks for the excellent suggestion, Emma.
Modern Communication
Television is a way to hear
the news of the day.
On the phone you speak with others
maybe even your sisters and brothers.
Browse a magazine at leisure.
It will surely give you pleasure.
Read a book and you will find
you've something extra in your mind.
Send a fax because it's better
than originally sending a letter.
Leave the front page of the paper,
you can always read it later,
Computers are clever, store information
and can keep it together
BUT!
Speaking together is much more fun
than all the technology under the sun!

Swans
Along the river they go,
come on land tip toe.
They all belong to the queen
and very often they are seen.
In the river they are reflected
as kings of the river they are respected,
White as paper, long-necked creatures,
Fluffy cygnets, graceful features.
Pretty birds they may seem
altogether they're serene.

Have you seen a miracle today?
I have.
I saw trees tower in green pillars of verdant gloom.
I saw dark rivers flow to their ultimate doom.
I saw a kingfisher of hope light the sky,
a silent prayer, the question -
Why?
I saw beauty unfolded in the palm of my hand
as a butterfly bursts forth on the land.
I saw children at play, beneath an ancient oak -
it seemed a fountain of life to which I awoke.
Have you seen a miracle today?
I have.

The wonder of the world,
The beauty and the power,
The shapes of things, their colours, lights and forms.
These I saw, look ye also while life lasts
It seemed very wintery by the river. The east wind swooping powerfully
across the flood plain was cold, making me shiver inside my coat. The
river slid by, smooth and dark, gurgling slightly as it passed through the
dry, dead rushes.
Yet spring was there. I could feel it all around me. The air lacked
winter's dry, suspended, lifeless feel. Buds looked ripe on the alders, with
their swinging catkins. The elder, its buds already burst, pushed forth
small dark green leaves. From the soil daffodils thrust green spears
skywards, whilst bright crocuses and demure, nodding snowdrops gave
one an impression of the season's glories to come.
I came to a wide sweeping bend on the river. The opposite bank
rose steeply and was clothed with trees, a mixture of mature oak and fir.
Overhead ten herons flapping industriously against the wind rolled and
dived. I had never seen so many herons together outside of a heronry and
I stared transfixed. They passed over the river and vanished behind the
wood. I knew now why I kept returning to the river.
It is a source of endless life. Another miracle, for they are all
around us if we but stop and look. We share this world with so many
other forms of life, each unique and all reliant on each other. We need to
remember this when we deal with the natural world.
A buzzard soared high overhead, circling lazily. Suddenly it came
down, but it only landed in an oak tree on the opposite shore. I watched
through my binoculars. A large powerful oak, bird blending naturally
against the rough, lichen covered bark of the tree. I have always loved
this bird. I remember as a child in the Welsh hills listening to its
haunting, mewing cry drifting on the summer breeze from high
overhead. I wished then, as I do now, that I could soar so effortlessly
with the swifts and the swallows on a sunny summers evening.
I turned my face homewards and was rewarded with a
magnificent sight. A flotilla of swans, dazzlingly white against the drab
river, floating like proud galleons in the current. There were over fifty of
- 14 -
these birds, some feeding and resting in a field. It was a stirring sight and
for me another pointer to spring's imminent arrival.
The great and blue tits chirruping in the hawthorn and willow
seemed to know too. Across the field in a strip of mature ash and oak a
wood pigeon cooed hoarsely - earlier than usual, I thought, as in previous
years it was March when I first heard this lovely sound.
I left the river reluctantly, but knowing that when
I returned it would still produce surprises and that
once again I would depart enriched by the
experience.
