Forming the future
The Link exists to encourage local community in some small way. The
church has wider aims, all to do with being human, our values and goals
- but living in a shared bit of land and society is part of it. Supporting
families that are giving shape to the next century by bringing up children
is one part of that. How to do it as patterns change is much talked about
and in some places a lot is done - here less than most. Thanks to a
succession of good workers the Youth Club has contributed over many
years to people learning to do things together. The pattern of Sundays
has changed a lot recently and now become a main slot for sport,
shopping - and work. It remains special for most of us - marked in
different ways. As a help to doing its job Sandford church has been
building a parish room and on 22nd September is going to open its
creche and Sunday Club with an early morning (10 a.m.) celebration - all
parents and children are welcome to come. For information ring Pam
(777011) - or just come and see - and maybe join. There is no charge, as
this is something the older members of the church are happy to support.

Ironing: Anyone in need of the Sandford local ironing service, please
telephone 718865.
Fete and Flower Festival
Thanks to everyone who contributed with time, prizes, energies,
contributions. Those who made the Trip Down the Thames with the
flowers said it was enchanting - we really can boast of one of the best
Flower Festivals in the county.
Summer Play-scheme
After an early complication caused by a neighbouring play-scheme the
Sandford one again went brilliantly. Thanks again to Sue Bowen and her
team of helpers. The committee could do with reinforcements, as it can
only continue next year if enough voluntary help is promised. Contact
Sue Bowen at 10B Heyford Hill Lane.

REST IN PEACE
Amelia Smith (affectionately known as Meally).
A loving wife to Jim, mother to seven children, and grandmother to
fifteen, and a loving sister to Eileen, she was also a good friend to all.
Kind, happy, cheerful, and with a great sense of fun, she was a fighter,
particularly during illness, and a strong defender of family values. She
was much loved and will be much missed.
Revd Dr David Nicholls
The sudden death of Father David, a friend to many in Sandford and the
Chairman of the Governors at Lawn Upton, last June has been much
covered in the national Press. A memorial service will be held in London
(Bloomsbury) at noon, Saturday 21st September and coaches depart
from Littlemore church. He will be very much missed, and our
sympathies go to Gillian, and to all our friends in that neighbouring
parish, once the enemy but now good friends.

The River Run
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fat, but strong in will ...
Alf Tennyson - Ulysses
The annual fun run departed at 4.30 on Saturday 29th June, and returned
at intervals and in varying condition over the next 30 to 60 minutes. A
record number completed three miles but the tough five milers were
thinner on the ground. A super fit member of the Dixon team came in at
30.49 (his last year winning fiancee and future father-in-law unable to
run this year - but surrendered the Sandford shield to the second arrival
Georgie Gibbons at 32.38 - amazing time for a 12 year old (his father
couldn't keep up with that so sat it out on the trainer's bench across the
road). Amy was also ill, so missed the chance of adding to her amazing
collection of medals. Andy Pike of cricketing fame came third (34.17)
and Steve Bull, a twice winner was down to 34.42 this year. Was this
generosity or advancing years??
Frank Bailey achieved 35.05 and Sean
Woodward 35.14 and Matthew Caldwell (aged 13) 38.20. Sam Hutton
maintained his fine 38.35 and Stefan (of the clan Andrews) and his friend
Philip Carpenter 38.45. There was then a long gap till Ashley Cadman
at 44.06 and the vicar at 45.06 - last man (there's a saying about that)
but narrowly ahead of the women 5-milers Sarah Grylls and Heather
Mitchell, both on 45.10. It was a mean race at the tail, but forgiveness
has been craved and vouchsafed. We hope these rather daunting times
will not discourage the less fleet of foot from competing next year ...
In the 3-mile race the Sandford Youth division (5-9) was won
fast by Matthew Daglish and Gregory Boyle (25.10) followed by
Matthew Judd (28.28), Ian Middleton (29.35), Nicky Hutton (30.42),
Mitchell Moulson (33.33), Jessica Boyle, Mark Wilmot (Youngest
Competitor medal at 42.14), Richard Earp, Haldane and Matilda
McFall. In the 10-12 division Daniel Welch achieved 24.16, Aline Smith
(25.40) - both gold - Paul Middleton 25.42 and Jo Hutton 25.43 (both
silver, followed by Thomas Wilson (28.30) and in no particular order
Aidan Maulson, Marinda Barry, Helen Daglish, Laura Rolston, Karen
Stimpson etc.
- 9 -
The 13-16 year olds were
rather slower, carrying extra weight
- the times are misleading because
of unclarity whether they did 3 or 5
miles, but if 5 they were pretty good,
especially Laura Earp, Jean Saunders,
Adam Charlton, Martin Stimpson, Jim
Smith, Andrew Paine, Nicole Rolston,
Steve Brookings. Timing also went
astray for the adult 3 miles, some of
them cunningly keeping down with their children, but some
commendation goes to Andy 'Slogger' Middleton (30.15), Charlie
Wilson (28.30), Zak the dog (35.01), Gina Ashburner, Val Rudman,
Pauline Rudman, Molly and Humphrey McFall, Rosie Earp, Ron Caffel
and Rosy, John Wilmot and other who didn't report in.
Some stalwarts of recent years were sadly working (Sue Norton,
Jo Dixon, Alan Brookings) so we'll go for 5.30 next year (and some pre-
registration to avoid further admin chaos. Thanks to First Aid patrollers,
water suppliers, guides, supporters, judges, timekeepers and above all
sponsors, who have made this event good news for Youth Club funds and
a help towards village building projects, notably the Parish Room.
CRICKET
The match against Warborough, on their fine Village Green,
will be at 2.0 p.m. on Sunday 29th September.
We have high expectations. Spectators welcome. Pub open.

Sandford-in-Cyberspace
Surfing the Thames - sorry, Internet - the other day the Link office
chanced upon Dan Tarzey's interesting entry on Sandford mentioned a
couple of Links ago. Dot by dot rather fine pictures of the Lock, the
church, Templars Farm, and Minchery farm come up on the screen in
colour and useful information such as the boat and bus times. There's the
literary touch with Jerome K. Jerome's famous reference (1889 - Three
Men in a Boat - to say nothing of the dog) to Sandford as 'a very good
place to drown yourself in' (p.174), and Oscar Wilde. It was nice to read
about the geo-physical survey on the fields near the Link office (not at all
intrusive) and that 'despite the proximity of Oxford and the new
developments, Sandford-on-Thames still enjoys something of the flavour
of a village.' Well done Dan - keep Inter-Netting.

Tug of war
An old Sandford tradition was partly recovered at the fete on 13th July
when rope was pulled. The two fine locals on Henley Road (Fox and
Catherine Wheel) entered impressive teams, as did Pheasant Walk,
Church Road and Rock Farm Lane. One team withdrew. Despite
some confusion, it seems likely that the heavy-weights from 'C.W. All
Stars' were winners but Fox clearly won
something, as did Pete East's team
the Pheasants. Church Road
pulled powerfully, anchored by
the Charltons and hard work put
in by Dr Wilkinson and Charlie
Wilson and others, but were finally
outgunned. In the interludes many
children pulled, also a scratch team.
The trophy was last won by the
Littlemore Rugby people and is still
being traced - meanwhile substitute
glass for silver was awarded.

The stalwarts who keep the churchyard tidy
would always appreciate offers of help.

Special services for people with physical disabilities
A new strategy proposal which covers the long term health and
social care for physically disabled adults, and aims to bring together the
disability services provided by Oxfordshire Health Authority and
Oxfordshire Social Services, has been produced for discussion. During
the consultation period any verbal or written comments, suggestions or
criticisms will be welcome. Meetings will be be set up in your area to
give you the chance to come and discuss the issues that interest you
most.
Watch out for information on your nearest consultation
meeting. Users and carers who incur expenses attending the
meetings can reclaim their expenses.
Further information from the Consumer Affairs Team, on
01865-226520, or Claire Laurent, Community Health Council, on
01865-723569.
The King's Arms
Our correspondent in the last issue of the Link who was unhappy about
the state of the King's Arms' surroundings has provoked much debate,
with many Kings's Arms' regulars feeling aggrieved. We have let them
know that we would be very happy to print any different point of view in
the Link.

Correspondence
From P.C. Chris Bolger, Community Beat Officer, Littlemore and
Sandford on Thames, to all the residents of Littlemore and Sandford on
Thames:
I have now been the Community Beat Officer for a year and a
half. I would like to take this opportunity to more fully introduce myself
and explain my role within the Oxford Police area of Thames Valley
Police. I have been a serving officer with Thames Valley Police for just
under 7 years, and in that time I worked at Woodstock, Kidlington and
Oxford.
As C.B.O. it is my job to liaise with local businesses, schools,
licensed premises etc, as well as with the public in general, in order to
gain an appreciation of the problems in the area. In order to do this it is
important that people report all crime and other police related problems
either to me on 01865-266411, or to the Police Control Room on
01865-266000, or to the Crime Desk on 01865-266333. Please do not
be put off by the thought that the police may not be able to do anything.
Whilst it might be true that some individual crimes will not be detected
due to lack of evidence, they often form part of a pattern in an area.
Offenders are increasingly being identified and caught by identifying
these patterns. If people fail to report things then this method breaks
down. This is particularly true of auto-crime and burglary. The police
continue to be reliant on the public for information towards the detection
of crime. I ask you not to be put off from assisting us by fear of
repercussions. Such incidents are actually very rare and we have to
decide whether we are going to let a small minority of criminals hold us
all to ransom in this way.
Part of my role is to provide a visible patrol in the area, as and
when other commitments allow. Hopefully I will soon be joined by a
second full time office, which will obviously increase our coverage of the
area.
I am very keen to promote new Neighbourhood Watch Schemes
in the area. No area of Oxford is immune to the problem of burglary and
Neighbourhood Watch has proved effective in providing a deterrent. It is
by no means a way of asking you to do the police's job for them. It is
- 13 -
simply an organised way of being good neighbours, remaining vigilant
and reporting information on suspicious incidents. By forming an
organised group it makes it easier for your local officer to provide
information on local crime and also give relevant security advice. Years
ago communities were closer and less mobile. By trying to recapture this
community spirit it makes it easier to identify suspicious strangers and
cause them at the very least to go elsewhere.
Mrs Carole Leary, Clerk to the Parish Council, has asked us to print the
following letter from John McGuire, South Oxfordshire District
Council to all Parish Council Clerks.
Large Scale Voluntary Transfer - Tenant Consultation
The District Council will be embarking upon a major programme of
consultation with its tenants during September and August to transfer the
ownership and management of its council houses to the newly created
South Oxfordshire Housing Association.
There will be a variety of formal meetings and open day/evening
events which will be starting on 9 September. The process of
consultation will end on 11 October.
About a week before the consultation meetings commence, we
will be sending to our tenants a formal consultation document which sets
out the terms of the proposal to transfer the stock from the Council to
the Association. Tenants will have the opportunity to let the Council
have their views on the proposal before the end of the consultation
period. Following the consultation period, the Council will need to
make a formal decision to go to a full ballot of tenants. We envisage that
such a ballot could be held during November. It would be conducted by
post through the Independent Electoral Reform Society.
I feel sure that in those areas where the Council has properties,
you and your Members will be approached by residents for help,
guidance and information on LSVT. This being the case I would be very
happy to provide you with a copy of the consultation document and
indeed, a copy of the video which we have produced, setting out details
of the proposal and what it will mean for the tenants.
