The Link
September/October 1990             Issue 34

A fond farewell...

Once again a double edition for September and October. This it seems will be the future for the Link. As this is my last copy as Editor it would seem to be the most appropriate time to thank everyone who helped during my period of service, without you my job would have been so much more difficult. And to one person in particular I would like to dedicate the following extract by Richard Lovelace:

When Love with unconfined wings
  Hovers within my gates
And my divine Althea brings
  To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair
  And fetter'd to her eye,
The birds that wanton in the air
  Know no such liberty

Harvest Supper

After the Service (6pm, not 6.30pm) there will be a Harvest Supper in the Village Hall at 7.15pm. All invited. Tickets for this meal £2.50 from Mrs Harris or Mr Jones. The Autumn Raffle draw will take place at this event (8.30pm) which takes the place of the Christmas Fair this year. Prizes and donations invited. It is hoped to make this an occasion in which villagers can meet their neighbours, some for the first time; and the food is guaranteed to be good!

The Sandford Run

Temperatures over 80° did not deter some 50 runners setting out on the first annual fun run to Radley. Some were in fancy dress, others quite professional. A few were noticed sitting in the river, and all the little fishes said etc. Marshalls along the route dispensed water and checked numbers and times. The Sandford gold cup was won by a visiting professional from the City Runners, Andrew Hope, but the first woman home was local - Mrs Bev Cook. In the young people's division medals were won by Tom Duff and Robert King (1st equal, 11-13 year olds, 22 mins 21 secs) and by Robert Preece (8-10 year olds), David Preece and Christopher Hackett (5-7 year olds, 27 mins, 25 secs). The award for the youngest finisher went to Julie Cook, aged 5 (29 mins, 38 sees). Outstanding performances in the 5 mile race included Stan Cotton, Nick Hawkins, Josie and Abbie Hobbs, Brad Harris, Ian Hunkins, Paul Collins, Derek Chambers, Steven Timmins, Vincent Boyle, Darren Beecham, Richard and De Jackson, Andy Hackett, Rev Morgan.

Other creditable performances in the 3 mile race included Robert Preece (22,40), Caroline King (25.01), Robert Rudman (27.23) Linda Hackett (28.23) Alan Cook, James Smith, Ben Bowyer, Ashley Harris, Kieman Harris, Callie Bowyer, Stephen and Sarah Brookings, Susan King, Chamiaine Harris, Pat and Jeff Pugh. A few competitors have not yet reported back alive, and a few withdrew on health grounds (sunstroke). Drinks were donated by Mrs Rolston. So with Registration fees and sale of drinks, a useful sum was paid by the Friends of Sandford Church to the Building Fund. Special thanks to all the marshalls and medical orderlies. Next year a cool time will be chosen, and we anticipate a large increase in entrants. The experimental route proved highly successful, with very few getting lost and no accidents. Thanks also to Max for holding up shipping while runners shot the lock - and their bolts.

POLL TAX CORRECTION

Someone in Sandford commented recently how glad they were to see that 1% of their poll-tax goes "to the parish" - ie to maintain the parish church. This is a big misunderstanding. The churches are maintained entirely by voluntary gifts - some from the past, but most from the present-day offerings of members and other well-wishers. In some countries the state contributes through taxes, but not here. In Sandford the church finance policy is for the contribution to diocese and nation to come from members' covenants and collections, and the local building costs to come from fete, raffle, Friends of Sandford Church covenants and donations. Since the building is a village institution, available to all for its proper purposes, we are grateful that a much larger proportion of the village helps maintain it by voluntary contributions than just the regular worshippers.

CONGRATULATIONS
Sandford has a strong sporting tradition, and still sports some outstanding. goal keepers (Garry), cricketers (Stan), runners (modesty forbids) etc. It is therefore a pleasure to note the election of our local London Irish Rugby player, Ian Stevens of River View to be Captain for 1990-1 (in the first instance). Ian is a lock forward, potential international and role model for younger sportsmen in the village. He leaves behind him (on Saturdays) a rugby widow Alison and new-born Alasdair, also a potential rugby player, and a new dog (not yet named).

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

I have come not to be served, but to serve. Here was Jesus, Son of God, who came as a servant to man. He showed humility in all that he did and wants this to be an example to us

Micah 6:8

This is what the Lord asks of you:
Only this, to act justly, to love tenderly
and to walk humbly with your God.

Linda Parrott.

There is to be an Autumn meeting about the Women's World Day of Prayer at the Wesley Memorial Church, New Inn Hall Street, Oxford on Monday 15th October to which the ladies of Sandford are warmly invited.

This year the service is being prepared by the women of Kenya, and June Lunn, the WWDP Field Officer, who was in Kenya earlier this year, will show slides and talk about conditions there.

The meeting starts at 9.30am with coffee, and will end by 12.30pm. Anyone interested in going should get in touch with Mrs Harris (24 Henley Road) or Mrs Gladwell (xxx Church Road).

Recipe

Chicken Liver and Green Peppercorn Pate

1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
2oz/50g butter
8oz/225g chicken livers, washed and trimmed
4tbsp double cream
1lsp chopped fresh thyme
16 green peppercorns in brine, drained and chopped
sprigs of thyme and green peppercorns to garnish

1. Fry onion and garlic in butter for 5 minutes. Add chicken livers and fry until evenly browned. Cool slightly.

2. Add cream and thyme, then puree in a blender or processor until smooth. Stir in peppercorns and season.

3. Spoon mixture into four ramekins, level tops. Chill for 1 to 2 hours until firm.

To make ahead: Cover dishes with cling film then overwrap in foil or polybags. Seal and freeze.

To serve: Unwrap and serve with crusty bread.

Following World Cup fever, here is an interesting cocktail to try:

Italia (pousse cafe)

3 teaspoons grenadine
1 teaspoon cherry brandy
I teaspoon white creme de menthe
3 teaspoons anisette
4 teaspoons yellow Chartreuse
a few dashes of blue Curacao

Pour the grenadine and the cherry brandy into the first small glass: the creme de menthe and the anisette into the second: and the Chartreuse and the blue Curacao into the third.

Stir the red liquid and pour into a tail glass.

Rinse the spoon, stir the white liquid and using the spoon, pour it a drop at a time on top of the red liquid.

Repeat with the third glass, and you will have all three colours of the Italian flag.

Hangovers all round!
