SANDFORD-ON-THAMES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

ISSUE 10August 88

THE VILLAGE HALL

At the last meeting, plans were finalised for the 'Summer Produce Show', to be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29th. We are looking forward to receiving many entries from readers and their friends and families. Details are on the back page of the Link, showing the various categories for entries, together with an entry form. These completed forms are to be returned to Marjorie Harris any time up until 10:30 am on the day of the show.

There will also be a dog show, kindly arranged by Hazel Hutton and Janet Shepherd, and lots of fun for everybody, with skittles, Aunt Sally and numerous other stalls.

In the evening, Hazel and Janet have arranged a 'Country and Western Evening'. Tickets are £3.00 each and include food (no that's not a misprint food as well for only £3.00!). Tickets for this can be obtained from Hazel or Janet.

We are hoping to run a fashion show in the Autumn and to hold a bonfire party to celebrate Guy Fawkes night, but, as always, we depend on village support and assistance to make these occasions a success, so watch this space for further details.

The Village Hall Committee Sunday car boot sales will be discontinued until October.

If anyone is able to offer any help for the setting up and running of the produce show, or able to donate any prizes, please give me a ring on:
Oxford xxxxxx (evenings and weekends) or Oxford xxxxxx (during business hours).

SANDFORD MEETING POINT

It was good to see the Meeting Point growing last month (the quiche lorraine was particularly appreciated). Keeping to the second Friday of each month, the next will be between 12.30 and 2.0 on Friday 12th August. Tea, coffee, lunch snacks will be served. The purpose of the Meeting Point is to offer those who are in the village during the working week, including mothers with toddlers, a place to meet their neighbours. If you are free, come along, however briefly, either on your own or with a child or neighbour, and increase your sense of being part of this local community or just enjoy an hour's break with others from the village.

ABOUT GOD

Last month's article 'About Religion' said that the existence of God is self-evident to some and a non-question to others. What matters for practical purposes is what you do about it - the religious response of worship and morality. Religious beliefs make sense of the world and our place within it, but cannot explain the total mystery. Who or what God Is, is beyond anything we can grasp. But everyone has some extraordinary experiences, often an overwhelming sense that life is a gift, and good. When we are able to connect this experience with what we have been told of God, the world begins to take shape for us.

In any religion the most important bit of information is where God is to be found and how known. The Bible is crucial for Jews and Christians, If we know where to look in it and how to use it. No-one's ever seen God, but the Father's only-begotten Son has revealed him, says St John. Jesus is where Christians find God. But where do we find Jesus? Many don't or don't recognize him. Some say they have been found by him. Christians claim to know him through the experience of worship and community. Nearly everyone who becomes a member of this community does so thanks to someone else whether parent, teacher, friend, or neighbour. Those who are members extend God's invitation to everyone. But the moments of recognition are few and pass quickly. We often miss the boat.

SANDFORD IN THE PAST

HISTORY ARTICLE NUMBER 2.

VILLAGE ROADS

There are a number of turnings off the Henley Road through the village. The main one being down through the village and over the ferry and so on to Abingdon. This village street is successively recorded as 'High Street' or 'Church Street' (never Church Road), but it is often referred to by the older generation a "along the top". This name changes into 'Frys Lane', from the farmer whose land and buildings abutted onto the lane here this name dates from 1730. Further down the lane, the name changed again, the last hundred yards or so being referred to as 'Mill Lane' or 'Ferry Road'.

Further south along the Henley Road, towards Wallingford, the turning which now runs down under the Sandford Link, was originally an ancient lane known and called by an earlier generation (those born before 1900), as 'Crablett Lane', and earlier still (in 1798). 'Crab Gate Lane' is recorded. Although a number of crab apple trees did grow along the lane, particularly near the eastern end, the names' origin owes nothing to these, although folk memory associated the two. It appears that in the early seventeenth century, this old way had, at it's end or somewhere along it's length, a 'clap gate', or what today would be called a 'kissing gate', which is a gate opening between two posts. This was the origin of the old name - so much for the oral tradition!

The lane probably opened out into unfenced fields, in particular to 'Stone Pit Piece'. Here were the pits from which the village building and road mending stone was obtained, the position of the last remaining pit can be seen from a small clump of fir trees to the left of the Sewage Works entrance.

When the brickworks opened in 1900, the old lane came to be called 'Brick Kiln Lane', by which name it was well known, until the construction of the Sandford Link.

YOUTH CLUB

Last month the Youth Club ran a coach to Southsea for the day. I think that I am correct when I say that everyone had a thoroughly good day despite the rain. I congratulate the youngsters who came along for their excellent behaviour, a credit to you all.

I must apologise for the delay on our return, this was due to underestimating the journey time and having to stop to assist another coach which was in difficulty. I hope that it did not cause too much concern to waiting parents.

Many thanks to Gina, Linda, and Grahme Barry who supervised the day well and to coach driver Robert for a good safe drive. Thankyou. At the time I write this article we hope to run another trip for August, details of which will be in this months issue.

Youth Club will run as usual through the Summer Holidays. Wednesdays 7pm till 9pm.

Kite Flying

On Saturday, 16th July, the Youth Club went to Southsea for the day. We left at 8.30 am and got there at 10.30am. When we got there we went to another beach called Hayling Island. It was too cold to go in the sea so we played ball on the beach.
After we went back to Southsea and we went to the funfair. Despite the weather. we all had a good day.
CARA LEARY.

On Saturday, 16th July, we went to Southsea. First we went to Hayling Island on the coach when we got to the beach, but before we went to the beach, Graham bought a beach ball, which we played with on the sea. We lost it once or twice. Then we went to the fair. I went on the Snowball and the Rolla Coaster and we saw a fight when we got off the ride. Then we travelled home.
CLAIRE WISE.

On Saturday, 16th July. we went to Southsea, and we went to the sea, and I paddled in the sea and we went to the Fair and we went on the Rolla Coaster, it was good fun. Claire went on the snowball which scared her, and it was raining nearly all day. I still enjoyed it very much.

SANDFORD AND LITTLEMORE BEAT

Last month a student was the victim of a robbery in Littlemore. Subsequently a series of rumours have arising about how he was assaulted, stabbed and other such things.
I can tell you that there were NO weapons involved and NO injury to the victim. The culprit was quickly apprehended and has subsequently been charged with the offence, I hope this will lay to rest any other versions of what happened.

Parking has become a real problem in some place on the area. One place that has come to the attention of the Police in the last month is Marlborough Close. I have on several occasions had to attend complaints from residence about cars poorly parked, preventing the dustmens vehicle from entering the Close to collect the rubbish. I appreciate that the residence do have a problem when it comes to parking cars and vans and to date I have been reluctant to take any action in relation to any of fences. The situation has however now deteriorated to such that the parked vehicles are causing obstruction to the Close which could prevent the arrival of Emergency services. This is a serious matter fire kills and seconds can mean the difference in an emergency.

Please, I ask you all. When you park your vehicle just pause for a few seconds and take and take a look around you and ask,' If I park here can a fire engine get past?' If you are partly on the footpath,' Could a wheelchair get past you on the same footpath'. The rest is common sense. The beauty with community Policing is that I can take the time to try and solve this and similar problems without using the law. For it to be effective it needs everyones cooperation. Thankyou.

If you have a problem or simply want advice on any matter you think may concern the Police, you can contact me by ringing Oxford 249881 Extn xxxx. Ask to leave me a message and I will get back to you.
Remember, in an emergency dial 999.
