SANDFORD-ON-THAMES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

ISSUE 6April 1988

ASSOCIATION REPORT

The next meeting of the Community Association will be held on Monday 11th April at 7.30 pm in the classroom at the rear of the Manor house, Henley road.
The last meeting which was well attended saw the blueprint for the Sandford on Thames Summer Fair made up.
The Fair will be held on Sunday 10th July.
The idea is to use the village recreation ground for a fair and stall area, The land to the rear of Rock Farm Lane would be used for a huge Car Boat sale and general car park and the Village Hall would become a refreshment area serving light snacks and drinks.
Most of the main tasks of organising the Fair are now well catered for but we could still use some more assistance for smaller tasks in the run up to July 8th. The wider the tasks are spread the less burden it is for everyone concerned, If you can help please come along to the next meeting. MONDAY 11th APRIL 7.30 pm. The Manor House.

Now a rather urgent matter.
Can anyone out there edit or assist in the editing of the Link. After this issue I am gong to have to hand over the editing side to someone else. The printing side I will be still be able to take care of but not the compiling of the Newsletter.
If no one is prepared to do this job then it may be possible to give the job to a professional editor which may mean the costs will become unacceptable. Please, you have a good Parish Magazine In the Link, many have remarked on it to me and others. It would be a shame to loose it now. If you would like this job (no previous experiance necessary) then contact Carl on Oxford xxxxxx. Thankyou.
If no one comes forward and the cost of doing the job professionaly is too great then this will be the last Link. Ed.

A MONTHLY MEETING POINT

Have you time on your hands you would like to share with other people?. The loss of the village shop has removed one of the places for finding out what is going on and meeting neighbours. The parish plans to try out a monthly meeting point in the Village Hall, Fridays 12.30 to 2.30, for anyone at home during the day to come and talk, listen, have a cup of coffee and exchange conversation.

There will be no age limit and small children with parents will be equally welcome. The first of these meetings will be on Friday 13th May. Snacks will be available but feel free to bring a sandwich. Whether to have lunch available on future occasions will be one of the things to discuss, along with possible activities, at the first meeting point.

The bingo continues to bring in the greatest amount of revenue to the fund and we are pleased that Mrs Janet Shepard and Mrs Hazel Hutton have given up another of their evenings to attend, so that we were able to thank them personaly for their magnificent efforts.
A big thankyou to all those who attend so regularly.
Marjorie and Dennis Harris continue to run the car boot sales on a monthly basis. The income from this is building up to a substantial sum thanks to their efforts.
Beverly Cook has been running the 200 Club most effectively but we could do with more participants.
During the last month the Hall has been professionally Spring cleaned and is now looking good. It is up to us all to keep it that way.
Finally our thanks to Mr Williams Janet Shepard, Hazel Hutton and Mr Robinson for making the effort to attend the A.G.M.

THE DEATH OF GOD

April begins with April Fools Day. This year it is also Good Friday. The coincidence invites black humour. At the begining of Christianity an Apostle pointed out how foolish it seemed to find God in a political killing in the Roman Empire. A creator Sprit God is surely all powerful. To find him powerless in a human degredation at the hands of petty Roman bureaucrats is offensive. If that were all it would be simply another tragic miscarrige of justice.

But that was not the end of Jesus. His small group of followers became convinced that he was still alive in a new a fuller way. His spirit was with them and they carried on the good news of God that his life had launched. They found themselves invited to share in better than their old self concern. Putting others first bought a new meaning to their lives. It bought a joy that not even death could end. Jesus lives, and this life of God offers new hope in dark corners in personal tragedy, econimic hardship and national disaster.

His violent death reveals a God who identified with the depth of human pain and despair, and can bring good out of evil. Instead of a hostile universe that mocks our efforts, a new world and new human communities are envisioned. The invitation remains open this Easter to all who are ready to be caught up in the love revealed in the life and death of Jesus. For the Church across the road standing for this alternative, All Fools day is also Good Friday.
