SANDFORD-ON-THAMES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER |
ASSOCIATION REPORT
DONT MISS THIS:
On Saturday March 19th at 1.03pm and again on Monday
21st March at 12.03 Radio Oxfords programme 'People and Places' is all
about Sandford. Thats 95.2 FM. 1485 KHZ. and 202 MW
The Link relies on an input from all the various sections of our
village. Only by persons involved in these groups actively using and
supporting the magazine can it function by keeping the members of the
village informed of current affairs and activities.
Firstly thankyou to all the groups who have now firmly established
themselves as regular contributers to the Link for their articles and
further ask members of other groups, clubs or organisations within the
village, including any residence associations to consider writing a
short article for the magazine each month. Most months It would be
sufficent to provide some basic information about the group as in the
Toddler Group's article this month, then when somthing else could be put
in, the heading in the magazine is all ready and waiting to include it.
Variety in a parish magazine is all important, if sufficent information
is not available then the result is it becomes tedious to edit and dull
to read. Before we get anywhere near that stage please, it's your
magazine, support it, let us have those articles.
------------------------------------------
On Friday March 4th at 7.30pm there will be a meeting of the Community
Association in the classroom at the Manor House Sandford, which is the
large house opposite and to the right of the village hall.
At this meeting we will be making a decision as to the date, area on
which the Event will be held and on its content. If you have any
suggestions please come along and make them known. We would particulary
like to hear from any of the village groups who would like the chance to
have a stall at the Event for their own fund raising purposes.

LENT
As Winter (mild this year) gives to Spring, the Church get's dug
into the most serious part of it's year: The 40 days and nights
preparing for Holy week and Easter. In a religious culture the whole of
society reflects the solemnity. In a secular one, Lent goes on mainly in
the privicy of individuals' hearts and minds. It is not for public
display. Turning to God in self searching and self knowledge is a deeply
and personal discipline. But religion has a public and social side too.
We need to meet and share . There is no on-going life without mutual
support. The sence of God be a personal discovery, but for it to
shape our lives we need the structures and regularities of a wider
community guided by a common purpose. ctd...
- 2 -
Lent is a time to get clearer on what it is all about, and to live it
better. We are invited to hear again the call of the spritual. Thou hast
made us for 'Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they find their
rest in thee'.
So with the poet:
Welcome dear/feast of Lent: Who loves not thee
He love/ not Temperance or Authroitie...
Yet Lord instruct us to improve our fast
By starving sinne and taking such repast
As may our faults controll:
That ev'ry man may revel at his doore,
Not in his pariour; banqueting the poore,
And among those his soul.

VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE
| Chairman | Mr Lawrence Boyd | | Hall Hire Charges: | |
| Vice Chairman | Mr Bob Absolom | | Villagers:........ | £15 pr session |
| Secretary | Mrs Marjorie Harris | | | £30 pr day |
| Booking Clerk | Mrs Marjorie Harris | | Non Villagers:.... | £25 pr session |
| Treasurer | Mr John Williams | | | £45 pr day |
At the February meeting of the committee, it was learnt that there had
been some complaints concerning the general decoration and cleanliness
of the hall.
The Village Hall has now been in use for some six years and, naturaly,
is showing signs of wear and tear: it was agreed that a general 'Spring
Clean' and decoration would be carried out; as a start, and thanks to a
generous donation of an electric polisher to the Hall, John Williams,
Carl Reynolds, Dennis Harris and Bob Absolom spent some time stripping
and re polishing the floor, This in turn will be followed by a programme
of cleaning and redecoration as and when time and finances allow. Any
offers of assistance would be appreciated.
If anyone has any complaints or suggestions concerning the hall, please
put it in writing and hand it to Marjorie Harris, so that it may receive
the full attention of the committee who are elected to carry out the
running of the Village Hall for the benefit of the Village.
We are holding the Annual General Meeting of the Village Hall Committee
on Monday 14th March, do come along and give us your support and
suggestions. We would also like some new members on 'the committee, how
about it, could you spare an evening a month?
Congratulations to John Williams who won £50 in Febs 200 Club draw.

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS 88
Blackpool is very well known for its Illuminations Display. However
those of you who have been before will know only too well that the
illuminations are only a fraction of the fun to be had at Blackpool.
Take Blackpool Tower for instance, five huge floors of fun ranging from
"Jungle Jim's Play Area", catering for children of all ages,to the
Magnificent "Tower Ballroom". The Tower is definatley a family occasion
whereyou can spend the whole day at a very low cost.
The "Pleasure Beach"
is Blackpools Fun Fair. One of the largest in Europe with rides for the
young and the old.
This year a trip to Blackpool will take place in
October, leaving on Friday 14th and returning on Sunday 16th.
The Guest Houses that are booked are all very comfortable indeed, they
have been used regulary by the organisers in previous years and we are
confident you will be very well looked after. All the Guest Houses are
fully licenced.
The weekend consists of Bed, Breakfast, Evening Meal,
Coach Fare, a Tour of the lights Plus an additional trip to the Lakes on
Saturday afternoon which is optional but included in the price. The cost
of the weekend is as follows:

SPORTS REVIEW
OXFORD UNITED
Wednesday 10th February v Luton Town.
After Oxfords unbelievable 7-4 defeat by Luton in the League this Cup
tie in the snow was a somewhat subdude affair. Luton went ahead with a
good individual from Brian Stein. Dean Saunders went close, then scored
easily past Les Sealey to equal the scores from the spot kick. Saunders
then missed a great chance to give Oxford the lead by missing a somewhat
dubious second penalty. Oxford had to be content with a 1-1 draw and now
have it all to do in the second leg, which will be screened live on T.V.
On Saturday 13th Feb the match againsed Tottenbam saw Oxford fight out a
goaless draw although they seemed to have the better of the chances.
Saturday 20th againsed Derby County was a vital match for Oxfords
relegation battle, Derby being just above Oxford in the League table
It ended in a 0-0 draw with Oxford having had the better of the chances
but yet again not making the best of them count.
On the transfer market Billy Whitehurst was sold to Reading and Colin
Greenhall has joined Oxford from Gillingham and is playing centre back.

SANDFORD & LITTLEMORE BEAT
Recent articles in the national press have concluded, after having
surveyed parts of the population, that the largest worry of any
householder is that of his or her's property may be burgled while they
are away on holiday. Justifiably so! this is a real threat. With the
coming of Easter comes the holiday season again. Take a good long look
at your security. Is it good, bad or indifferent? Will you go away this
year hoping that you won't get burgled or in the knowledge that it would
be exceedingly difficult for someone to do so. Look at it from the
buglers point of view, your neighbours security is excellent and yours
is weak. Which house are you going to choose Door and window locks are
not an indication of wealth just "Real hassle" to a would be burgler
If you need help or advise on any matter which may concern the Police or
If you would like a security survey of your house or property then ring
me on Oxford xxxxxx ext xxxx If I am not there leave me a message I'll
get back to you.
