How we handle them says something important about how we are living our
life. In it's small and often trivial way Valentine cards can be a way of
celebrating a love. In a larger and sometimes costly way, fasting or living
a bit more simply for the 40 days of Lent can be a chance to reorder our
priorities, putting others before ourselves, the personal spiritual
discipline is not undertaken for its own sake. It prepares us to catch a
glimpse of the glory of God as Winter gives way to Spring, and death to
resurrection. We may be spiritually dormant, but we are being offered an
opportunity to awaken things within ourselves which could transform our
journey through life.
O thou who camest from above |
The Parish Council at its meeting on the 22nd December decided to spend some of the surplus funds from the 1987/88 budget on improvements to the village. In particular, the replacement of the old concrete street light, which are crumbling away, and, if possible, the provision of additional street lighting.
The Council is also to look at the possibility of improving village maintenance generally and the safety of the playground equipment.
With this in mind, the Council decided by a majority vote of 4 to 1 to maintain
the 4p rate levied giving a rate income of £4647.00 for 1988/89.
TREE PLANTING AND LANDSCAPING
Thee planting and landscaping conservation grants are still available through the District Council, acting as agents for the Countryside Commission. Grants of up to 50% for or tree planting and up to 40% for landscape conservation are available. The latter covers such projects as pond restoration and in exceptional cases, creating new ponds, hedge planting and laying, management of small non-economic woodlands, etc.
In all cases any works carried out must be of amenity value to the general public and not just the landowner himself.
Furthermore in the aftermath of the recent exceptional gale Central Government, through the auspices of the Countryside Commission, have made available £2.75 million for south-east England. This will be available as grants towards the cost of planting replacements for trees lost in the gale and also under consideration are grants for essential tree surgery to damaged trees which are of particular landscape value. The exact rate of grant has yet to be decided but it will probably be higher than rates mentioned above.
Applications and enquiries should be made to Mr. A. Nall, Forestry Officer, South Oxfordshire District Council, tel. no. (956) 351351, extn. 3774.
If you know of an area in Sandford that would benefit from a tree planting
or landscaping scheme please contact Mrs. Carole Leary, Clerk to the Parish
Council, tel. no. xxxxxx.
OXFORDSHIRE ROADS IN WINTER (as issued by Oxfordshire County Council)
Notices and maps are displayed on the Parish Council Notice Board in Church Road and the Notice Board in the Village Hall.
As far as possible all the roads shown on the map will be salted when icy roads are anticipated.
However, when the weather forecast is uncertain, ROADS WILL NOT BE TREATED
UNTIL THERE IS AN OBVIOUS RISK THAT ICE OR RIME will form on road surfaces.
This could mean that:-
Machines do not always function correctly all the time. A TEMPORARY BLOCKAGE in a salt distributor COULD MEAN SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF METRES OF ROAD NOT BEING TREATED BE PREPARED FOR THIS.
DO
1. START YOUR JOURNEY EARLIER
2. USE THE MAIN ROADS (as they are more likely to be treated)
3. DRIVE AT REASONABLE SPEEDS
4. DRIVE WITH GREAT CARE
5. LISTEN TO LOCAL RADIO BULLETINS
DO NOT
1. TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT ROADS HAVE BEEN TREATED
2. ASSUME THAT IF A ROAD LOOKS WET IT IS SAFE
3. HAVE EVEN 'ONE' FOR THE ROAD (Winter driving needs a keen reaction)
4. BECOME IMPATIENT IN SEVERE CONDITIONS
MINIBUS SERVICE
It has been suggested that there is a need in Sandford for a minibus service and it would be helpful to have the views of the parish on the following points and sane idea of the likely number of passengers before the Council takes any further action.
1. Which points in the village should the service run to or from.
2. Where outside the parish it should run to or from.
3. The day or days of the week it should run.
4. For each journey, the earliest departure time and latest arrival time
which would be acceptable.
Please let Mrs. Carole Leary, Clerk to the parish Council, have your comments,
tel. no. xxxxxx.

The protection of life.....and property!
I know from talking with you that many of you do read my article regularly
and usually expect to read about some crime or offence related problems. My
first paragraph of this issue is a statement which has been a guide for all
Police Officers since the very beginning. You will note that the bits most
talked about, crime and detection take second place in that paragraph. It
is for that reason that I make no apologies for choosing a topic this month
which bears little association with Police work and probably isn't really
what the paragraph was intended to convey all those years ago, until the
present day. Never the less 'protection of life' means just that and this
month I would like to put my contribution towards the prevention of a
steadily growing menace which is apparently killing more people than crime
at present.
Take a look around you, can you really afford to take a chance?
FIT A SMOKE DETECTOR. To coin a phrase popular with my occupation.....
