SANDFORD-ON-THAMES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

ISSUE 2December 1987

ASSOCIATION REPORT

The Community Association last met on Monday 26th October, when the following items were amongst those discussed:

ASSOCIATION LINK NEWSLETTER

The new "LINK" will be published monthly and is intended to keep the residents of Sandford-on-Tharnes informed of various events and news in the Village, as well as providing entertainment in the form of puzzles, cookery and articles on local history, schools, etc. Contributions, especially puzzles, and articles for children would be very welcome.

If you would like to write an article, either on a regular basis or as a "one- off", please contact Carl Reynolds on Oxford xxxxxx. Remember, EVERY household in the Village will receive a copy of the "LINK" on the first day of each month. If you don't, please let us know.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Plans are underway to give a Party in December for Village children aged between 5 and 10 years. Further details inside this issue.

ANNUAL FUND RAISING EVENT

The Community Association aims to hold a large fund-raising event once a year, possibly in September, the proceeds of which will help buy/fund the needs or services required by the Village and which, at present, are lacking (for instance, a playgroup during school holidays, a minibus).

Various suggestions have been made concerning the type of event we could hold. However, nothing has been decided yet, and if you have a suggestion, then please let us know, either by coming along to the next meeting of the Association or by contacting the Chairman, Carl Reynolds, or the Secretary, Ann Addyman.

Mr. Keene, a local farmer, has very kindly offered the use of some of his land for the annual event.

NEXT MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The next meeting of the Community Association will be held on MONDAY, 7th DECEMBER at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall. This is YOUR Association, so do come along if you can. Refreshments will be available.

(PLEASE NOTE) DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES INTO THE LINK IS 6PM ON 20TH OF EACH MONTH, TO xx HENLEY ROAD, IN A SEALED ENVELOPE MARKED LINK PLEASE.
THANK YOU.

CLERGY NEWS

The Reverend Robert Morgan is due to succeed Fr. Mayhew as acting Priest-in- Charge. Though in retirement, Fr. Mayhew will continue to assist in the parish, and the Revd. V. Rogers will also occasionally officiate. The new Bishop of Oxford will visit the parish early in the New Year.

Robert Morgan lives xxx Iffley Road, Oxford (Tel. xxxxxx) and parishioners are welcome to call. He was ordained in 1966 to a curacy in Lancaster and has been teaching the New Testament and Christian doctrine in Oxford since 1976. His wife Prue works for Oxford MIND as co-ordinator of the Acorn Centre in Cowley. Although not living in the Village, they are happy to be sharing in the regular worship in the Parish Church. Clergy come and go, but the Village has an identity of its own and the Parish Church enshrines a long history. St. Andrew's Church does not belong to the Christians of today alone, but to the Village, its past and its future.

ADVENT

The December "LINK" appears two days after the Advent Sunday Evening Service of Carols and Readings on 29th November. But there remain three more Sundays in Advent, the season of preparation for the celebration of Christmas. We shall all be busy preparing on the material side, and this is important, and worth the effort. We are bodies as well as minds, and bodies need feeding - as we shall be reminded by those who rightly ask us to do something for those who will not eat much this Christmas. The material gifts and the cards we send are also important as signs and sacraments of our care and love for other people who are special to us. Giving and receiving can be a deepening of relationships, and even a card tells someone we may not have seen this year that we want to keep in touch.

[Top] [Index]

Much of our preparation for Christmas this month will, therefore, be outward looking. But it will be a lost opportunity if all this activity crowds out the equally necessary and ultimately more important inward preparation. Whether we are regular worshippers or not, we are all spiritual beings, and need to make space in our lives for the truth about ourselves and our world to be brought into focus.

The life and death of Jesus, whose meaning is communicated in the story of his birth and what happened after his death, provide a framework for this larger understanding of our own lives. Christian worship is the way we enter that framework and are sustained in it. All this is a serious business, and needs to be taught and lived. The church in the Village will continue to provide a base for this teaching and praying, witnessing and directing attention to the God who shares in the joys and sorrows of human life.

How silently, how silently
  The wondrous gift is given.
So God imparts to human hearts
  The blessings of his heaven.

- Seek, and you will find.

VILLAGE HALL

Committee:

Chairman Mr Lawrence Boyd
Vice Chairman  Mr Bob Absolom
Secretary / Mrs Marjorie Harris
Booking Clerk
Treasurer Mr John Williams

The Village Hall Committee was formed, initially, to build the new Village Hall and subsequently, to raise money to re-pay the loan and effect repairs and carry out improvements, etc.

The running costs of the hall are covered, in the main, by hiring fees. The hall is available to rent and villagers are offered special terms. Mrs. Harris, the booking clerk, will be pleased to give any help or advice as required. The current hire charges are listed below:

Hall Hire Charges:
Villagers:.....£15 pr session (morning, afternoon, or evening)
£30 pr day
Non Villagers..£25 pr session
£45 pr day

To continue to run the hall on the above mentioned basis rather than add the costs to the Parish Rates, it is essential that the Committee is given your support in attending any functions organised (see "What's On" for current happenings) and by taking out membership of the "200 Club" you could win a Christmas bonus if you join this month. We shall look forward to seeing as many people at the "Open Evening" on January 12th, 1988.

SANDFORD & LITTLEMORE BEAT

"Hello, I'm collecting on behalf of ....."

A familiar introduction by someone who has just knocked on your door, especially now Christmas is drawing near. Most collectors are genuine and are collecting for a very worthwhile cause, but BEWARE. In our area in the past few weeks we have started to get an increase in bogus door to door collectors, collecting on behalf of schools, scouts, etc.

If you get a collector calling, then he or she should have some positive means of identification. ASK FOR IT! Check it is what they say it's for, not just another credit card. Also, any collector or organisation who is doing the job properly will have informed the Police of what is going on. If you are in any doubt, please - dial 999 and let us know as soon as the person has called. If they are genuine, the person will appreciate you helping to protect their reputation. Let them get away with it and it really may be daylight robbery. Whatever the nature of the call or request, don't let them in, Pensioners Please note.

Don't become a victim for Christmas.

If you have any problems or questions which may concern the Police, you can contact me on Oxford xxxxxx ext.xxxxx and leave me a message.
Remember in emergency Dial 999.

Thank you
PC Carl Reynolds
Community Beat Officer

FOOD & DRINK PAGE

It's not too late to make you Christmas Cake the microwave way!

8 oz butter or margarine
8 oz dark brown sugar
grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
grated rind and juice of 1 orange
4 eggs, beaten
1 tbsp black treacle
2 oz flaked almonds
        4 oz glace cherries
4 oz mixed peel (optional)
2 1/2 lbs of mixed fruit
1 oz plain flour
1 oz cocoa
3 tsps mixed spice
3 tsps sherry

1.  Lightly grease and line a 9-10 inch microwave dish.
2. Cream together the butter, sugar, rinds and juice.
3. In a jug, mix together the eggs and treacle, then gradually add this to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition.
4. Toss cherries and peel in some flour and add to mixture along with the almonds.
5. Sieve together flour, spices and cocoa. Fold half the flour and half the dried fruit into the mixture, repeat with the remaining fruit and flour.
6. Lastly add the sherry.
7. Tip mixture into the prepared dish, smooth over the top, cook on simmer or low setting for 50-60 minutes. Check, and if it is not cooked (insert cocktail stick in the middle, it should come out clean when cake is cooked), add time in 5 minute batches.
8. Leave to cool in the dish, then turn out onto foil, sprinkle with either rum or brandy, wrap up and leave to soak. You may repeat this again. The cake can be made just a week before Christmas, and tastes just as good. It can also be marzipaned and iced if you require.

Bon Appetite!

Ann Waterfield

SPORTS REVIEW

November started well for United when they stormed back into the Littlewood's Cup with a 3-2 win over Leicester at Filbert Street. After their disappointing draw at the Manor, it looked as if they were to go out of the Cup. Dean Saunders pulled a goal back just before half-time after Oxford had gone 2-0 down to two well taken goals by Mike Newell. After the interval, United played some inventive football as play went from one goal mouth to the other. Gary Shelton made it 2-2 and, amidst controversy over a hand ball, Shelton hit his second of the night in the last minute to secure a place in the next round for United.

They now play Wimbledon at home on Wednesday, 18th November. After the excitement of Wednesday's victory the match on Saturday against visitors Coventry was a somewhat subdued affair. Coventry started off the better side, but lacking the final touch. Trevor Hebberd was United's hero in defence after Neil Statler had to be substituted after just a few minutes, suffering a gash above his right eye. Just as it looked as if we were in for a 0-0 draw, Dean Saunders was brought down by Coventry's new defender Kevin Smith and promptly jumped up to hammer home the ensuing penalty; and claim another 3 points for United, although not without a let off because Cyril Regis got the ball in the back of the net despite being brought down by Tommy Caton on the edge of the penalty areas, and to Oxford's relief and Coventry's disbelief, the referee disallowed the goal and gave a free kick, allowing Oxford to go into 9th place in the table.

In the Simod Cup Oxford faced Crystal Palace and only just over 1,000 fans watched as Oxford struggled to win and go into the next round with a match at either QPR or Reading away as the next step of the competition.

On Saturday the 14th, Oxford took the trip down the A34 to play Southampton at the Dell, and ended up wishing they'd stayed at home. This was one of Oxford's poorest matches for sometime. The Saints were given so much space especially Jimmy Case who helped his team force corner after corner, attacking the United goal. United seemed to be on top for a few minutes when Southampton took the lead through a Sammy Wallace header to lead at half time. United started the second half promisingly, but a superb individual effort by Glen Cockerill in the 63rd minute made it 2-0. United made a double substitution but with little effect before Wallace claimed his second and the Saints's third to make it 3-0, leaving United wondering did they miss Ray Houghton? Surely Maurice Evans will need to strengthen his squad if United are to keep moving up the table and advance into further rounds of the cup matches.
