Issue No 55.November 1986.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS WITH CHILDREN OF PRE-SCHOOL AGE.

On the 10th November 1986 at 4p.m. in the Village Hall I intend to show a video on the danger of going with strangers. A short lecture will accompany the film.

The film in question is regularly shown to children in the lower schools who are made aware of this danger today. This showing is for the benefit of the below fives who as yet may not realise the dangers.

It is my intention to keep this showing for the residence of Sandford. I will however be arranging an identical show for Littlemore at a later date, in the Community Centre.

P.C. Carl Reynolds.

FIREWORKS.

I want to thank everyone who contributed with donations of cash towards the fireworks and also to everybody who helped on the evening, especially Angela and her husband who dealt with catering and to Jerry Heery and Max Hobbs who kindly helped let off the fireworks.

I must apologise to any of the villagers who were inconvenienced by the fireworks and the load explosions.

I am sorry that one resident found it necessary to speak to me about the fireworks and the fact that we were burning money that could go to a 3rd world country. Irrespective of what our sentiments are over the 3rd world we must think of our own children and realise that we should not starve them of the things they like in this life and if the lady concerned had attended the firework display she would have seen the joy on the childrens faces.

Parish Council Meeting Monday 27th October 1986

The Parish Council met in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm when all the Parish Council was attended except for Mr Harris who sent his apologies. Mrs Nikki King our District Councillor was present throughout the meeting as also was P C Reynolds the community policeman.

There was a discussion about the possibility of a group of people from a community project coming to the village to clear it up. As the bus shelter outside the Village Hall is in need of repair, it was decided to ask whether they could also rebuild the shelter if the materials are provided. As the labour is free, it is hoped that the group will be available. PC Reynolds stressed that he is the community policeman and around Littlemore and Sandford every day. A message can be left for him each day and he will deal with it as soon as he can. He is anxious to assist and try to deal with problems before they grow out of proportion

A letter has been received from South Oxfordshire District Council about the provision of services in and planning for emergencies a scheme for community volunteer recruiting and training. Anyone who is interested in this scheme should contact Mrs Heery for further details.

A further report on the Blackbird Leys development was available at the meeting. It is quite lengthy but very interesting and the copy can be borrowed from Mrs Heery.

Concessionary fares on public transport are now available at the discretion of the Local Authority for the following;

(a) people suffering from mental handicap or severe mental

(e) people who are without the use of both arms
(f) specified companions of any eligible persons required to assist travel on public transport
(g) any person who is likely to be now eligible for bus tokens should contact Mrs Heery

Information about AIDS was made available at the meeting having been supplied by Oxford City Council where there is a city strategy for combating AIDS and preventing its spread Marsh Baldon Primary School is looking for more pupils. There is a prospectus explaining its aims and any child from Sandford is eligible to attend there.

The next meeting will be on Monday 24th November at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.

Parishioners are reminded that the meetings are open to the public. Anyone considering standing in the elections in May 1987 may like to come to the meetings in order to see what goes on.

MAGAZINE ARTICLE

SANDFORD AND LITTLEMORE BEAT

On several occasions now I have had cause to speak with adults and juveniles regarding the lights on pedal cycles at night. The numbers I am pleased to say are few but still youngsters are riding around without lights after dark.

It is parents responsibility to ensure that their children are not riding bikes without lights. If your son or daughter is reported for the offence, you will probably have to pay the fine. If he or she is knocked off and killed or seriously injured you Will pay the price for life. Winter Is fast approaching. At the end of October the clocks will be going back and darkness will be upon us much earlier. It is usual for the police to pay particular attention to this aspect at this time of' the year, for obvious reasons. I Intend to do just that myself. I don't want to see any children injured or killed this winter. If I catch anyone riding a pedal cycle without lights in Sandford or Littlemore after dark, you can expect to be reported. BE WARNED.

On a more pleasant note, but still on the subject of pedal cycles, a lot are being stolen in our area, from schools in particular. Once stolen, the only possibility of you ever getting the bicycle back is usual luck, UNLESS you have a very small and free step of having your cycle stamped with your house number and postcode. We have hundreds of lost stolen Cycles coming into possession. One way or another every year, and quite simply without the means of identifying it, it probably will never find its owner. Don't be caught out. I have acquired the use of a cycle stamping kit and on the 14th and 28th November I will have the kit with me at my surgery at Littlemore Community Centre, Giles Road. Come along and get that cycle stamped. The dates and times of the November surgery are as follows, until then take care.

SURGERY FOR NOVEMBER.
14th November 4pm - 5pm, cycle stamping
28th November 4pm - 5pm, cycle stamping.

If you need help or advice with any problem that may involve the police you may contact me by ringing Oxford 249881, extn 2513 between 9am and 4pm. Leave a message for me and I will contact you as soon as possible, and remember in an emergency, dial 999.
