In last months issue of the Sandford Link I put a piece in about the
shrubs being pulled up around the Village Hall. This information was
given to me in good faith by a very responsible member of our village,
as the Link was just about to be printed I had no opportunity to check
the information, the new shrubs had in fact not been pulled up. Mrs
Hazel Hutton has written a letter to the Village Hall Committee and
I quote " it is hoped that Mr. Boyd will correct his statement in the
next Link as it looks as though we have a lot of hooligans and
vandalisers in our village."
Churchyard
Once again somebody has smashed a tombstone in the village churchyard
and also set fire to a bin just behind the church that could have caused
serious damage. There has also been a fire in the rubbish bin outside
Elmslea, totally destroying the bin, causing extra cost to the ratepayers
of the village.
Light & Telephone for Village Hall
Mrs Hazel Hutton has written to the Village Hall Committee asking that
they consider putting a telephone into the Village Hall and a light on
the gable end of the hall due to vandalism taking place to vehicles
during Bingo sessions. These two ideas have been discussed by the committee
on a number of occasions. It was unanimously decided that they
were unable to afford a telephone and due to the closeness of the public
telephone, unnecessary. However a light has been donated and it is
hoped to have this put up during the summer.
Village Fete
The Village Fete is taking place on the Playing Field on Saturday June
7th, your support will be greatly appreciated. The main attraction will
be a knock-out competition which was a great success last time. It is
also hoped to have the first appearance in England this year of FATHER
CHRISTMAS.
50/50 Auction
A small 50/50 auction will be held in aid of Village Hall Funds on
Sunday June 8th starting at 2 pm. If you have anything you would like
to put in contact Joyce Latham at 42. Henley Road, or phone Oxford
716537, where a message can be passed on and collection if necessary
can be arranged. Items will be on display in the Village Hall during
the Fete on the 7th June. Please support us, it is in aid of your
village.
Similarly I imagine that nobody (well no decent body!) would encourage their domestic pets to use a neighbour's garden as their alternative toilet, nor break down their neighbour's fence to enable them to take a short cut through his garden. Nor even, I imagine, permit their children to enter a neighbour's garden to use a swing or other recreational apparatus which the neighbour has supplied for his children.
But when the neighbour is not an individual, things are different Or so Magdalen College School has found. Of course it is very tempting to have a large expanse of green field on one's doorstep, even more so when it contains goalposts, and it is perhaps irritating that a fence prevents one getting into or out of it on the opposite side! But the other side of the coin is the fact that it is very unpleasant for the owners and users of a sports facility to find it liberally spattered with dog messes, depressing for senior teams (and groundsmen ) to find the grass worn bare in their 1st XI hockey goal mouths and costly as well as infuriating to find an expensive fence (which was insisted upon by the Department of the Environment) cut in two places.
I point no finger at any individual. The School, and I as its representative, are anxious to be on excellent terms with all our neighbours so I'd rather ask that our property be treated with the same respect as that of other neighbours than mutter about trespass or injunctions. And in any case what I've written will not apply to many people. But I would be grateful for consideration by any to whom it does apply.
Thank you.

MANDY
The sweetest thing in all the world, Is Mandy my rag doll. She came when I was one year old, Some people think her droll. She is my boon companion, Who sometimes tries to roam, And then I'm most unhappy, Until once more she's home. One day my Nana took us out, To Cardiff Castle and about. Afterwards we went for tea, And our hearts were full of glee. Boarding a bus to take us home, We soon discovered we were alone. Oh: Mr Driver, can you wait Until I know my Mandy's fate? Back to the powder room we ran, And other places did we scan. Mandy was nowhere in sight, She gave us such a dreadful fright. I really thought that she was lost, Till glancing upwards saw a post. Tied upon it was Mandy, Looking oh so fine and dandy. The kindly driver could not wait, Seeing the lamppost, said to his mate, I'll place her there for all to see, He knew how very thrilled we'd be. For years she's gone to Sunday school, Then just a week ago, I started out for Day school, My thoughts were very low. Timidly I asked my teacher, Please can Mandy stay? Why yes, my dear, of course she can, This really made my day. What should I do without her, No words can e'er express, I know she'll never leave me, For her I love the best. With love to Eleanor after our adventure in 1970 Mrs Hulin. |
The A.G.M. M. of the Parish Council was held on May 18th. All the members were present and six members of the public. Mrs. Agulnik was elected as chairman and Mr. Hutchinson as vice-chairman.
objections were raised about the Electricity Boards proposed intentions to bring power cables over the lock to Sandford from their Sub Station on the Kennington side of the river. St was asked was it not possible to put the cables underground, the Electricity Board have turned this idea down due to the cost involved.
Mr. Hutchinson has been supervising the soil being put on to the wharf site but pointed out that the operations had been halted due to adverse weather conditions but he hoped the job would be completed by the next meeting and the soil Completely levelled.
One of the residents Of Rock Farm Lane wanted to know why Magdalen College was interested in buying enough land at the bottom of the lane to give a turning space for cars. The council were unaware of this and propose to write to the College asking what this was all about.
Mrs. Agulnik stated that if anyone required a copy of last years accounts would they like to contact her, she will gladly let them have one.
The audit of this years accounts take place on Monday 30th June at 9.30 pm. They will be on view at County Hall until July 11th normal Office.
Next Parish Council Meeting June 16th 7.30 pm.
Kindness & Unkindness
Ian and Penny Pavier who lost their home in a fire at Kiln Park are now
slowly getting their problems sorted out. They have been sent a caravan
by Debbie Davies and Mrs Stanley kindly lent them enough beading to
survive, although they were unknown to her. However, with all their
troubles some very unpleasant individual sent them an anonymous, letter.
How unfortunate that when people have problems enough already that someone
chooses to be this unkind.
Village Directory
I have now finished compiling the Directory for this village with all the
telephone numbers I think you will find useful. Please keep it with your
other telephone directorys so that you can refer to it if necessary.

Cat and dog poisoned
A labrador dog and a cat have been poisoned at River View both animals
suffered greatly before their death. If you see any food which has
been put out which looks at all suspicious, it is suggested you report
it to the authorities. It is better to be safe than sorry, the poison
was strong enough to kill a labrador it would most certainly kill a child.
