VILLAGE DIRECTORY

I am now putting the finishing touches to a Village Directory which includes all the organisations in the village, and if there is any-. one who wants anything included in it who has not already contacted me please do so by May 14th.

PARISH COUNCIL

At the council meeting held on April 14th Mr. Mervyn Harris was co-opted on to the Parish Council. At this meeting Mrs Agulnik who stepped into the chairmans place gave her annual report, when she thanked Miss Burra for her invaluable contribution to Sandford-On-Thames. She congratulated the Village Hall Committee for their sterling work and maintaining the hall in its good condition. She also pointed out that the hall continues to be a financial strain on both the hall committee and Parish Council, but hoped that the existence of the hall outweigh the drawbacks.

On the financial side she said the income of the Parish Council has been far exceeded by the outgoing. Some of the outgoings include concessionary bus fares for pensioners, new litter bins, the electricity consumed of light standards, the Parish Council also paid for the clearing of the wharf site and the fencing of the site.

Because of the difficult financial position, the Parish Council found itself in last year, it was decided to ask for an increase in rates to 4p in the £.

Mrs. Agulnik continued to say that the next election for a full parish Council will be in May 1987 and it is always worth having an election for new ideas and new people on the Parish Council must be a good thing. She stated, she was mentioning the elections now, so that if anyone interested in standing for the Parish Council might like to attend the meetings each month as a member of the public.

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE ON MONDAY 19TH MAY AT 7 .30 PM.

Fete Day

On 7th June the Fete will be held. One of the many events that is being held is a Knock-out Competition which is being organised by Gwen of the Village Post Office. If you feel you can help in any way Gwen will be very pleased to hear from you.

If you would like to help with the running of a stall or have any good ideas, please contact Marjorie Harris on Oxford 777900.

TREE PLANTING

Someone very kindly planted a number of trees along the fence of the Village Hall, within a matter of hours somebody very irresponsibly ripped the trees up. The Village Hall Committee decided some time ago that anyone found vandalising the Village Hall or its surrounds will be reported to the police for prosecution. If you know who is doing the damage please report it to any member to the Village Hall. Committee, in confidence.

During this millennium year of the Domesday Book I went to the library to see what it had to say about our village of Sandford. This is what the translation had to say;

Wenric holds Sandford from the abbey. 10 hides. Land for 8 ploughs. 4 hides of this land are in lordship; 2 ploughs there.
7 villagers with 4 smaliholders have 3½ ploughs there Woodland 28 perches long and 30 perches wide; from two fisheries 10s. Value before 1066 £8; later 100s; now 60s.
Blackman the priest held it from the Church
In the same village Robert and Roger hold 1 hide from the abbot. Land for 1 plough. They have it.
The value was 15s; now 20s.
SIWARD held it from the abbey; he could not withdraw from the Church.

WENRIC holds Sandford from the abbot. 4 hides. Land for 5 ploughs.
3 villagers with 4 smallholders have 1 plough
    Meadow 10 acres
The value is and was 40s.

Dear Mrs Harris,
We have now had the use of The Village Hall for over a year, and I thought your committee would be pleased to be told of our complete satisfaction with the arrangement.

The Hall is always ready for our use, everything clean and tidy, and I hope you always find that we leave it as we find it.

Our good wishes to your members.

Yours sincerely,

Violet P. Weeks (Mrs)

*****   COOKERY CORNER   *****

Azerbajdzhan Lamb Patties

2 lb (900g) boneless lamb
shoulder, with some fat left on
2 large onions
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed
lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
freshly ground black pepper
cayenne
basil
spring onions, tomatoes,
lemon wedges

In a food processor or mincer, mince the lamb and the onions together finely. Then stir in the lemon juice and add salt, pepper, cayenne and basil to taste.
Shape the mixture into sausages about 4 in (10 long and 2 in (5 cm) wide. Chill them for 2 hours.
Prepare coals in a grill. When they are hot, skewer the lamb patties, pressing the meat firmly with your hands to make sure it adheres to the skewers. Grill over hot coals for about 10 minutes, turning to brown all sides. The lamb should still be pink inside.
Serve the patties garnished with fresh spring onions, tomatoes, and lemon wedges on a bed of fresh cream.

Serves 4-6.

Georgian Cauliflower

1 small cauliflower (1 lb/450g),
separated into flowerets
4 oz (120g) butter
2 small onions, finely chopped
4 tablespoons minced parsley
2 tablespoons
coriander
2 large eggs, beaten
salt, freshly ground
white pepper to taste

Steam the cauliflower over boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain. Meanwhile, in a large frying pan saut'e the onion in 2 oz (60g) butter until golden. Add the remaining butter and stir in the cauliflowerets, turning them to coat with the butter. Cook, covered, for 10 minutes more, until tender.
Stir in the parsley, coriander and the beaten egg. Toss to coat, cooking only until the egg is done. Season to taste.

Serves 4.
