| Issue no 46. | November 1985 |
The boundary commission have recommended that Sandford-On-Thames be included in the city of Oxford boundary. Although these changes are still to receive ministerial approval we have still time to put: objections to the commissioners, any such move will Sound the death toll for the village as we Know it. It will also mean that: the rates will rise from 10.5p in the £ district rate to the present 20.2p in the city rate.
I hope as many of you as possible will attend the Parish Council
Meeting on November 11th 1985 to reiterate the unanimous opinion
of the village that Sandford does not: wish to go into the city.
We must give the Parish Council our total backing on this.
Fireworks
ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9TH 1985 AT SEVEN O'CLOCK, FIREWORKS AND BONFIRE WILL BE HELD AT THE VILLAGE HALL FOLLOWED BY A DISCO. ENTRANCE TO FIREWORKS IS FREE BUT THE DISCO WILL COST 50P EACH.
Myself or Dennis Harris of 24. Henley Road, Sandford-On-Thames,
will be grateful for any donations of fireworks, or money. (My

was poorly attended. I have decided to organise another fashion

The Late Mrs Burra As you all know Mrs Burra passed away earlier this month. We send all our sympathys to Miss Burra (Chairman of the Parish Council) and her sisters on the death of their mother. Doctor and Mrs Burra spent part of their honeymoon in Sandford, in 1912 and return in 1947. Many feel on the death of Mrs Burra, they have lost a wise councilor and friend, who had a deep interest in the village and all its affairs, to the end of her long life. Mrs Burras' funeral was not necessarily an unhappy occasion, villagers joined her many friends and large family in our village church,in gratitude and thanks for a long and happy life. The funeral exemplified the friendship the family has shared with Sandford over many years. |

Advent: A New Beginning?
Many thanks to all who worked for, and so generously supported, our September Fair and Harvest Thanksgiving. We made £307 by the Fair, and the Harvest gifts dignified our worship and were much appreciated by the Cowley Road Nazareth Home. The continued help and goodwill of the Village is most encouraging.
Our next festive occasion is Advent Sunday, the first of December, when the 6.30. Evensong will be a special service of Advent readings and songs. People are already looking ahead to Christmas, and if it to be rightly celebrated we need a time of preparation for its holy just as we need Lent before Easter. Advent is the beginning of the Church's year, when we make ready for God's coming to earth to be one of us, in His manger-cradle. So our spiritual new resolutions may perhaps lead us to renewal from 1 December, rather than 1 January!
People often tell me that they don't have to come to Church to be a Christian. I know what they mean, so I don't argue, just listen! They mean that it is possible to be good, kind and generous without 'going to Church'. But the purpose of Christian Life is to worship God and enjoy Him forever. We can't worship in isolation. Sandford Church is the house of God in this village. It was built in 1100 and has been maintained with devoted care for 885 years to provide for the Worship of Sandford's people, for our shared expression of the worship of life, its value to us as God's gift in Creation and Renewal. Going to Church sounds like a troublesome duty, something we'd rather he without; but 'Come and worship' is a joyful invitation. Bring the children: we will help them worship in their own ways during the first half of the 10 am service, and they will be welcome at the 6.30 Evensong.
On the 13th October, Bishop Taylor confirmed eight young people and one adult in this Church. Baptism carries, for parents and Godparents, the promise that the baptized children will be 'Brought to the Bishop for Confirmation'. Baptism needs to be strengthened and made real in experience by the free choice of the person concerned; There cannot be free choice if, through neglect and indifference, Christian life and worship has faded in family and friends.
I shall he glad to help all young people and adults who would like to know the meaning and purpose of the Christian Way, so that at least a true choice may be made, with the opportunity of more Confirmation, and perhaps some more baptisms to!
December the first, Advent Sunday, is just the time for a new
beginning.

Dear Villagers,
As I am resigning from the Fund Raising and Management Committee, I would like to thank you all for the support you have given me in everything I have taken part in, to raise funds for the Village Hall, etc. Dog shows (helped by Janet Shepherd), auctions (especially Lawrence and Jerry) raffles. Also for the flowers and shrubs for the Village Hall surroundings.
This does not mean that these events will discontinue. As I am still interested in raising funds for our village

HEDGEHOG CAKE
A favourite with children of all ages.
Delicious, rich and fattening!
7 oz margarine/butter
8 oz sugar - soft brown or caster
2 tablespoons golden syrup
1 tin condensed milk (13.5 oz size)
1 lb crushed digestive biscuits
4-6 oz melted chocolate (plain or milk)
Melt together the fat, sugar, syrup and condensed milk. Bring carefully to the boil (using a non-stick pan). Stir continuously and boil gently for 4 mins. Cool slightly, then add the biscuit crumbs and mix together well. Press the mixture into a swiss roll tin, and leave to set till firm in the fridge. Then spread the melted chocolate over the top, and sprinkle with chocolate vermicelli or grated chocolate. Cut into small squares or fingers.
For a smaller quantity, use half the above ingredients, along with
a small tin of condensed milk. This also freezes well.
BACON DUMPLINGS (a supper dish)
8 oz self-raising flour
6 oz streaky bacon finely chopped
1 small onion finely chopped
1 beaten egg plus a little milk
good pinch of salt
4 oz chopped suet
good pinch of dried thyme
1½ pints chicken stock
Fry bacon gently till fat runs, together with the onion. Add to the flour plus suet and mix with the beaten egg, together with a little milk to make soft but not sticky texture. Lightly flour and drop into boiling chicken stock; cover and poach gently for 30 minutes.

By now many of you will have seen the floor in the village Hall.
We have Dennis Harris and his son to thank for this, they have
certainly made an excellent job of it. It have saved the Village
Hall Committee over £500, which would certainly have meant a lot
of fund raising on the committee part. Many thanks Dennis & son.
