| ISSUE NO 44. | SEPTEMBER 1985 |
The parish Council of Sandford-on-Thames is extremely angry about your biased report "Council Attacks Mourning Family", on the front page of The Star on August 15th. It is a slur on the Council and on the inhabitants of the Village. It is also a slur on Mr Boyd who wrote the original article for the Sandford Link, the newsletter published by the Parish Council.
The following facts must be made clear:-
1. The article published in the Sandford Link was in no way aimed at the Loveridge Family or the Travelers on the Ten Acre Site, nor indeed at any other particular person or family.
2. At the time of writing Mr Boyd did not know that Mr Loveridge was terminally ill.
3. The article by Br Boyd highlighted the increasing frustration felt by inhabitants in the village over the rubbish and noise created by repeated illegal encampments by the roadside in the village. The problems described in the article have been apparent in Sandford over a long period of time.
4. The report has made mischief and stirred up unjustified ill feeling between the Travellers of the Ten Acre Site and the other residents in Sandford. After a long and difficult period of adjustment relationships were improving between our communities and this ill informed and ill timed article by someone who plainly knows nothing of the background has done great harm.
If you insist on putting your paper uninvited into our homes, will
you please see that it tells the truth and does not stir up trouble
in the interests of producing a dramatic headline.
Six parishioners attended the Parish Council meeting on 5th August, and Mrs King was also present. A variety of matters were discussed.
VILLAGE CARETAKER.
Mr Hesmer has now been working for us for a month, and the Parish Council
expressed its approval of the improvement he has made, cutting the verges
down Henley Road. We are very glad that he has taken on the job and
sympathise with his difficulties working in such weather.
LITTLEMORE LOCAL.
It was decided not to take this paper any longer. We have not received
any strong wishes for it to continue from any parishioners, and believe
that £78 a year could be better spent on your behalf.
BUS SERVICE.
Oxfordshire County Council regularly asks us whether we can suggest
improvements to the service, and has often had services restored at our
request, though these are not always fully used. This time we have not
asked for an extra service but. reported that the 1705 from Oxford to
Reading is often so full with peop1e going to Rose Hill, that those
wanting to go to Sandford or further can sometimes not get on at
intermediate stops. We hope they can solve this difficulty for us.
COLEMAN HOMES.
Coleman Homes have appealed against S.O.D.C.'s decision not to allow seven
moorings alongside their development at the Mill. The Parish Council
did not object to the application but stipulated that moorings should be
allocated to stated dwellings so that they would not cause increased
river traffic. This view is in accordance with that of the River Thames
Leisure Policy (1980).
ROCK FARM LANE.
Mr Dougan and Mr Langford complained of the two broken drain lids in the
lane, which are dangerous and insanitary. S.O.D.C. Technical Services
Dept had looked at the drains at Mrs King's request, but had taken no
further action. The Parish Council has now written to the Department
to ask for their help. It was pointed out at the meeting that as Rock
Farm Lane is a private road the Council is not responsible for it, but
the frontagers, including Mr Keene, are responsible for all repairs. In
view of this, the frontagers could apply for a Rates Rebate.
We are very grateful to Denis Harris for putting up the large wooden
climbing frame for us. It meant a lot of hard work and organisation
When it is dry again, if ever, the frame must be painted with preservative.
This is a poisonous substance and MUST NOT BE TOUCHED FOR 48 HOURS after
application. When it has been done, there will be a notice fixed to the
frame. PLEASE WARN CHILDREN TO KEEP AWAY.
TRAVELLERS.
The Parish Council has been pleading with Oxfordshire County Council
for years to take some action to prevent parking on the junction at the
top of the village, not only because of the nuisance caused but because
of the obstruction to sight-lines at the corner. Until now we have
been told this was impossible, for a variety of reasons. Just before
the last Parish Council meeting, we were told that a trench would be
dug round the area and we could plant shrubs on the land. The work has
now begun.
NEWSPAPER COLLECTION.
We have sent another load of newspaper to Stonesfield. This time we
earned £32. By the time we have subtracted the cost of fuel to
transport the load we make little profit: £14 for the village and £7
for the Church, but it still seems worth doing as many people are glad
to dispose of their papers in a good cause. The first garage at Elmslea
remains available for your contributions. Please tie them firmly and
stack well so that Miss Judd's Mini will not disappear under an ava1anche.
If anyone knows of a nearer waste paper dealer, we would be glad to know
of him.

I would like to point out that the views expressed in any editorial of the Sandford Link are solely my views and not necessarily the views of the Parish Council.
I would like to thank all the people who have taken the trouble to phone me, write to me and speak to me with their support and their comments on the terrible piece of reporting in the Oxford Star.
My only hope is that any other reporting by the Oxford Star is factual,
unbiased and not malicious. Furthermore, if the Star reporters wish to
contact me on any subject, it would be extremely helpful if they go to
the correct address, they just might be able to contact me then!

This year the Village Trail is open to all the readers of the
Sandford Link, and once again the questions will take you on a trail
around the village. In most you will find two clues. All can be
seen from the public footpath, but in one or two cases a little
knowledge of historical dates will be required. Some thought and
good observation will secure success. You can award yourself 5
points for every question answered, or part of a question where
there is more than one part.
Take care on your walk around the village, and GOOD LUCK!!!!!
1. Spring Summer Autumn and Winter are the four seasons, but it would be useless putting the cat among the pigeons here.
2. At Horton-Cum-Studley they put the pig on the wall to see the Band to by. In Sandford, what animal and where is it to be found?
3. More modern music than a farm.
4. In this year people were exchanged for hay and straw. When and where?
5. Not a railway station. When?
6. Normally I can see alright, but when we are closed we come up
trumps.
8. I used to bring the water up from below for coach horses. What am I and what colour?
9. They wrote this about me - "In as much you did it unto these the least of my brethren you did it unto me." What is my name, my age, where did I work and my profession?
10. Where once we played now stands stabling for horseless carriages.
11. Not a drop passes both back and front without my seeing, but when was I built?
12. It started in the same year, but when did it finish? Exact date please.
13. Give the number of steps needed to reach a recreation place.
When you have completed the questions to your satisfaction, place
them in an envelope and hand them in or put them through the
letter box of No 24 Henley Road, or give to the Editor. Your answers
must be in before the next publicity date of the Sandford Link.

After all the rain we have had, the day of the fete turned out to be the sunniest day of the month; (I even heard someone complain that it was too hot).
From the comments I have heard it appears everyone enjoyed themselves, this alone makes the village Hall committees work or organising the fete well worthwhile. The total money raised after expenses was just over £400.
Organising of next years fete will begin again this month, and any
ideas for raising money either at the fete or at any other time during
the year will be gratefully received by the committee.

We have received a report from our two young ace reporters on the fire which took place in a mobile home. Many thanks to Ann-Marie Morgan and Lucie Ranger.
KILN PARK DISASTER by Ann-Marie Morgan & Lucie Ranger.
On 26th August, around 1.30 am a disaster happened in the Crescent at Kiln Park.
I was sleeping the night at Lucie Rangers, when I woke up and saw lights reflected on the wail. I called Lucie and said shall I look out of the window. Lucie said yes, so I looked out and saw flames. I told Lucie to come and look - we stared in amazement.
We were just about to call the fire brigade when the firemen arrived. We called to Lucies sister Debbie, then went out to see what was going on.
No-one was in the caravan, it is thought they were away on holiday,
so no-one was injured luckily, but it will be heartbreaking to have
lost their home when they return.
