I personally use the bus Service very little and therefore I did not realise
that at curtain times of day, namely the 7.47 a.m. from Sandford that the
driver has discretion on whether he goes down Cornmarket Street into
Gloucester Green or goes straight down the Abingdon Road and back to
Berinsfield, the last stop in Oxford being St Aldate's.
Free Shopping Bus
Tesco's Superstore, Abingdon, is laying on a free bus service twice a week
leaving Sandford at 12.25 p.m. on Mondays, returning from Teseo's at 2.30 p.m.
On Wednesday, leaving Sandford at 9.55 a.m. departing Tesco's at 12.20 p.m.
There is also two buses leaving the Spud Centre, Rosehill on Tuesday at 9.40 a.m.
departing Tesco's 11.50 a.m. Thursday 12.10 p.m. Spud Centre, departing at
2.20 p.m. from Tesco's.
One Way system Kiln Park
Cumberland Estates remind everyone that the one way system has been introduced
on the park. However, there are still a number of people especially motor cyclist
riding against the one way system. Cumberland Estates point out that the system
is part of the rules of the park and they will not hesitate to take action
against anyone breaking the rules, this could involve the banning of these
vehicles from the site.
Music - Hi-Fi's - T.V's
Now that the summer is here (we hope) please remember your neighbours when you
have your windows open and remember they may not like your type of music or
T.V. programme.
Births
Congratulations to Sally & Steve Nazey on the birth of their son Kevin, a
brother for Joanne.
There are a number of births, marriages and deaths that I do not get to know
about for sometime, so if you know of any please let me know.
Disco
Due to the misunderstanding at the Fancy Dress disco in May, a free disco has
been organised on July 13th for teenagers and younger members of the community.
Starting at 7.30 p.m. - finishing about 10.30 p.m.
Retirement of Church Warden
May I through the Sandford Link thank you all very much indeed for your
generous gift, which I assure you greatly appreciated. During my 39 years
as Church Warden, I remember all the help given to me by past Co-Wardens and
friends. Many thanks,
|
And best wishes, Yours sincerely, Charles Pitson. |
A very cheerful meeting of the Parish Council took place on 24th June. Mrs. King attended and one parishioner and there were no absentees. There were no major matters under discussion but progress was reported on several issues.
Wharf Site
Scrub and dead trees have been cleared from the site, and the
fence in under construction. The amount of rubbish revealed means that the
clearance is a much bigger job than we anticipated, and there is concrete
foundation on part of the site, which we cannot remove without great expense.
The weather also has not helped operations. Before the site can be properly
levelled we need a large amount of top soil. If anyone knows of any available
would they please lot Mrs Heery know. We would like to thank Mr Heery and
Mr Hutchinson for erecting a 'Private Mooring' notice on the bank, as we
were beginning to have unwanted boats mooring there. We would also like to
thank Mr. Hutchinson for supervising operations on the site as it has been
cleared.
Adventure Playground Climbing Frame
After hold-ups because of the weather and the availability of a digger, Mr. Dennis Harris has kindly put this up for us, with the help of his son-in- law, Alan Cook and a friend, and we would like to thank them very much for all their hard work. We have asked our insurance company to check the equipment and hope that it will prove a valuable addition to the facilities in the recreation ground.
Railings of the Recreation Ground
We have brought paint to repaint the railings, and when/if the summer comes, Mr Norton and Mr Heery have offered to do the job. It is very cheering to have help from so many volunteers with the many jobs which have to be done around the village.
Village Caretaker
As you will, have read in the last Sandford Link Mr Brooks who helped us last summer has died. We are glad that Mrs Hutton who was able to represent us at his funeral. Mr. Hesmer has applied for the job this summer and is to start on a month's trial. We look forward to seeing improvements to our grass verges, which are a disgrace at present. We are grateful to Mr. Smith for cutting the grass at the corner of Church Road and Henley Road, which made the corner very dangerous.
There will be no Parish Council in July, so the next meeting will be on the
5th August.

Readers of the Link will have read and perhaps seen the clearing of the old Mill Wharf for the use of the village, and perhaps wondered about it's origin, so perhaps a few notes on the history might be in order.
The name given to this piece of land is of comparatively new usage, only dating from 1902 when this portion was sold off from the 'Sandford Estate' to Messrs Benfield &Loxley the brick manufacturers. The land was raised a little and a hard standing made from what had been a swampy piece of pasture land. Benfields kept a stock of bricks and river ballast here for delivery by river, here also, much of the coal for firing the brick kilns was unloaded from the narrow boats, brought direct from the Midland coalfields, to be carried up to the brickworks by horse and cart.
The earlier name for this land however, which then stretched as far as 'Bassimere Cottage' was the 'HAM' (May I suggest a good name for the house nearby) which in 1849 the area is stated to be 1 acre 3 roods and 33 pole. Anciently this was the homestead of 'Bassimore Farm' of which the present Bassimer Cottage was the farmhouse, prior to 1730 it had been farmed by Arthur Fry (Fry's Yard).
On the death of George Benfield in November 1914, Loxley had died previously in 1906 and the closure of the brickworks, Benfields wharf was sold by his trustees to Cannon &Clapperton Ltd in 1916, where the mill stored wood pulp and latterly, resin for the manufacture of patent site by the British Bewoide Company.
An earlier wharf, is the land which lays immediately north of the 'Kings Arms', which also formed the ferry boat landing place. Here was held the annual village club day fair for over sixty years.
A much earlier wharf must have existed in the 14th century, when Wheatley stone was being loaded onto the barges at Sandford for the building of Abingdon Abbey, but this was probably below the mill.
At the north end of the wharf in the 1930' stood a large asbestos building, the workshop of Anderson &Bucknall, Electrical Engineers. Mr Bucknall will best be remembered for that most excellent and popular Mono kite which they made and sold. Very few of the village boys were without one or these, the kites are said to have been designed by the designer of the Comper Swift aeroplane.

The River is a source of pleasure to many and it the a great pity when a small minority, who through mindless acts, spoil the enjoyment of a great many people.
Not wishing to dwell too long on this subject I would end by stating that
prosecutions can be brought on offenders under the THAMES NAVIGATION AND
GENERAL BYE-LAWS.

Some people may have read in the Oxford Times, Geoffrey Hedges
notes regarding the future of Rock Farm. They would have perhaps
noticed that they totally contradict Miss Burra's notes in last
months Sandford Link. Mr Hedges notes were completely inaccurate,
and he missed-reported the details of the Parish Council Meeting.
Miss Burra's notes in the Sandford Link were as discussed at the
Meeting. At the moment there is not even an out-lined Planning
Permission for Rock Farm let alone anything else.
Thanks.
I would like to thank Marg Harris for helping me with the Sandford Link this month. Unfortunately Libby was away sick and therefore was unable to type the Link, this being the reason why there are no adverts this month and why it is so small.
I would like to give my apologies to all those who usually
advertise in the Link.
