| Issue no 40. | May 1985 |
Thursday May 16th is Ascension Day. 'Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father,' said Jesus to Mary on Easter morning. His ascension means that he can be with us now in spirit, with everyone, everywhere, simultaneously, as he could not be in his human life. So we need no longer 'hold on' to the Jesus of first century Palestine, because we can be with him now, and always, in the Holy Spirit.
Whitsunday, May 26th, celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit with power, enabling the disciples to stand up and proclaim publicly, in the same city in which Jesus had been executed as a criminal, the saving truth of his divinity. It is called Whitsunday (White Sunday) because as the birthday of the Church, it was the most appropriate day for Baptisms. The 'candidates' (from the Latin for 'white') wore white robes as a symbol of purity.
On that day our confirmation classes for adults and for young people
will begin. Please notify Mrs Hobbs of 27 Church Road, if you would like
to join. Attending the classes does not commit you to Confirmation.
This must be your own free choice. But how can you decide NOT to be
confirmed unless you know what is involved. There may also be some,
already confirmed, who would like to renew their understanding of the
Christian Way.

A parish Council meeting was held on Monday 22nd April. There was not a great deal of business, but estimates were considered for the clearing and fencing of the Wharf Site, and after some alterations this will go ahead. It was noted that the willow trees below River View have been pollarded as we decided at the last meeting.
We have not yet received any notice of when our roads and footpaths may be repaired.
As you will have realised from editorial comments in the last two copies
of the Link, there has been some disagreement between the Parish Council
and Mr Boyd about the financial arrangements for the Link. These
difficulties have now been settled and the Parish Council will continue
to fund the paper as before.
We would like to know the views of villagers
on the Littlemore Local. At the moment we spend £78.00 a year of your
money from rates on supplying the Littlemore Local to every home.
We wonder if you feel this is money well spent, or whether we should
discontinue it and spend the £78.00 on something else.
The Parish Council
is divided in its views, and we would like to know how many people
really want the Littlemore Local. If you would miss it and think we
should continue to subscribe, please let a Parish Councillor know, so
that your opinion will be represented at our next meeting.
The Parish Council meeting was followed by the Annual Parish Meeting which was attended by 9 Parishioners, Mrs Norman our retiring County Councillor and Mrs King our District Councillor. My report covered matters of general interest which have been described already in the Sandford Link. I would however, on your behalf like to record here our thanks to all those people who run the Village Hall and the activities which take place in it. There are many people who work extremely hard organising events, running clubs, erecting fences, repairing damage to property. Sandford would be a poorer place without them and we appreciate them very much. More helpers are always welcome!
Mrs King gave a short report and answered questions. Mrs Norman gave
a short account of her work in the County Council, chiefly concerned
with education. In this area we have been lucky not to suffer the
difficulties of school closures. On May 2nd our County Councillor will
change as we no longer vote with Littlemore, but with Dorchester and
The Baldons. We are grateful to Mrs Norman for all her help in the past

I attended the Annual General Meeting of the parish Council and as I forecast in the July 1984 issue of the Link, Mrs Connie Norman who stood for this area on the County Council as representative for this word was in attendance, this is the first time for over two years she has attended a meeting. When Mrs Norman was asked what she had done to help this village during its many problems with the itinerants her reply was, "I worked hard to get the Gipsies roads and hard standing". This must have been at least eight years ago.
Thank
goodness we now have a chance to elect a new county councillor who will
know where Sandford is and will help us. As editor of the Sandford
Link, any problems we have in the village in future, where we need the
help of our representative on the county council, I will write to them
and ask their views on the subject. I will print any replies in the
Link.

The parish council has agreed to spend £900.00 to convert the old wharf site in Church Lane into a riverside picnic area.
Councillors also agreed to continue providing ten concessionary bus fare tokens for every elderly person in the village.
The state of the pavements and highways throughout the village is causing concern and it is hoped that the county council will carry out repairs in the near future.
It was decided to once again employ a village caretaker to keep the village tidy.
It was reported that a proposed new access to the holiday caravan
and camping site at Temple Farm Country Club had been rejected by
South Oxfordshire District Council.

If anyone wishes to have anything put in the sandford link, would
they please let me have it by the 20th of each month.
There will be a fancy dress disco in the village hall.
A licensed bar has been applied for. There will also be a
barbecue. Proceeds in aid of the village hall funds.
Everyone is welcome to come for an evening of fun and laughter.
More details will be published in the next edition of the Sandford
Link.
While assisting Bob Hutton with the fence around the Village Hall, I was amazed to see a number of very inconsiderate dog owners. They allowed their dogs to foul the centre of the playing field where children play. Apart from the disgusting mess this excreta can make on a child, there is also the possibility of disease. It has been known to cause blindness in children.
I am not a dog hater as I have my own who I have taught to go in my
garden in the same area every time, and like my neighbour who has dogs
and children, we then clean our garden each day, thus preventing the
fouling of our village.

Last month, Hazel Hutton organised a meat draw in aid of the Village Hall funds which was so successful, that she now proposes to organise a draw every month. I will not be announcing the prize winners in the Link, as there are so many prizes it would take almost a page.
The list of winners will be put up in the Post Office and the mobile
home site.
