The Link

Issue no 39.April 1985

*****   SANDFORD LINK   *****

The Link at present has no financial support from the Parish Council and is now totally reliant on support from the advertisers and any contributions anyone is prepared to make. Since last months issue I have been approached by a number of people saying what a pity it will be if there is no more Link, I have decided to continue bringing out the link even to the stage of financing it out of my own pocket. I feel I owe it to the people of Sandford. Either myself or Bob Preece will attend Parish Council meetings and report them each month.

*****   VILLAGE HALL   *****

Once again the Village Hall has been badly vandalised and will cost over £200 to repair, apart from the local "yobs" damage is also being done by youths coming to the village from Rose Hill and Littlemore. The damage this time also included interfering with the gas vent on the roof. I would have thought that even the most mindless idiot would have realised how catastrophic this could be.

*****   VILLAGE HALL SURROUND   *****

For the help given to Templeton College by Hazel Hutton, Janet Shepherd and Lawrence Boyd, the college has given the village hall committee a large number of shrubs which will be planted around the village hall to landscape the area, this will be done during the next week.
Hazel and Bob Hutton with the help of John Latham have started to put up a fence to protect the shrubs. Work will continue this week-end on finishing the fencing. Unfortunately John and myself will not be available to help with this task and on Hazels behalf can I appeal to anyone who has a few hours to spare on Sunday afternoon to contact Hazel on Oxford 779767.

Once the fencing has been erected the hall committee has decided to make good their threats of last year and prosecute anyone causing damage to the hall through vandalism.

*****   PARISH COUNCIL NOTES   *****

South Oxfordshire District Council Planning Committee have met at Temple Farm to have a personal view of the access to the Country Club. Parish Council were hoping to find out the date and times so that they could make arrangements to be present.

The two cottages which are for sale in Church Road are being advertised with rear access. The Parish Council decided to look into this matter as the Parish Council appeared to think that no such access existed.

A donation of £5 was made to the Playing Fields Association by the Parish Council.

Sandford Parish Council will be receiving from the North West Planning Authority planning applications for Littlemore Parish to see if any of their plans will affect this Parish. Likewise Littlemore will be receiving Sandfords Planning Applications.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be the Annual General Meeting. This will be held in Sandford Village Hall on Monday April, 22nd at 7.30 pm.

Robert Preece.

*****   A LITTLE STORY   *****

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT 4 PEOPLE NAMED EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, AND NOBODY.
ONE DAY THERE WAS AN IMPORTANT JOB TO BE DONE AND EVERYBODY WAS SURE THAT SOMEBODY WOULD DO IT, ANYBODY COULD HAVE DONE IT, BUT NOBODY DID IT.
SOMEBODY GOT ANGRY ABOUT THAT BECAUSE IT WAS EVERYBODYS JOB. EVERYBODY THOUGHT ANYBODY COULD DO IT BUT NOBODY REALIZED THAT EVERYBODY WOULDN'T DO IT.
IT ENDED UP THAT EVERYBODY BLAMED SOMEBODY WHEN NOBODY DID WHAT ANYBODY COULD HAVE DONE.

*****   BINGO   *****

Janet Shepherd, Hazel Hutton and Gwen Absolom are continuing to run an excellent bingo on Thursdays at 8 pm. Taking into consideration we are only a small village, the prizes are excellent, they range from legs of lamb, pieces of pork and beef, to boxes of fresh fruit. Please make every attempt to support them as it is such a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work to arrange. Unfortunately there will be no bingo on the 11th and 18th April.

*****   ELECTIONS MAY 2nd   *****

Mr Charles Farrell has been adopted as the Conservative County Council candidate for this area in the forthcoming County Council elections.

*****   DEATHS   *****

We are sorry to hear of the death of Cyril Turner on January 11th who lived at 101 Henley Road and had lived in the village for over 40 years.

*****   CONCERT   *****

The concert arranged by Elizabeth Burra and performed by members of Peers School was a great success. Although all the performers were

of a high standard I especially like the young girl singer and the lad who played the clarinet. We thank them for a most enjoyable evening.

*****   CHURCH NOTES   *****

The Annual Parish Meeting will be in the Church at 7 pm on April 14th after a shortened Evensong at 6.30 pm.

Confirmation classes for young people will begin on Sunday May 26th after the 10 am service. Please tell me of any candidates for these, or for Adult Confirmation Classes.

Easter reminds us that Resurrections is not just an event in the remote Palestinian past, but a present reality. Every day we wake from the darkness of sleep, our regular death rehearsal, to renewed activity. In our Baptism we die to sin, and rise again to newness of life. 'Sin' means separation from God. If the purpose of life is to worship God and enjoy Him forever, we need a daily renewal of thankful joy to keep us in trim for this aim; and every Sunday is a little Easter, for on this day Christ rose from the dead to lift us into fullness of life.

Rev. P. H. Rogers (Father Val)
