| Issue no 38. | March 1985 |
Each month the Sandford Link takes a lot of preparation and I get totally no assistance from any one else in Sandford for its preparation. On numerous occasions I have had to make telephone calls to get items for the link and people who have in the past volunteered have very quickly realised how time consuming it is.
The Parish Council in June 1983 subsidised the link to the tune of £11.50, this was when it was one sheet of A4 double-sided paper. Since then it has become an eight, twelve or even sixteen (on some occasions) link. The cost to the Parish Council has risen to between £16 - £18 per month. Taking into account inflation, and the extra paper required I think the link is still good value. On average, the cost is £0.0618p per household per month.
It now appears that the
council want more paperwork each month right back to June 1983.
I would have been prepared to submit this paperwork as I went along,
I have not like some of the councillors got the time. I also have
a business to run. I have decided that if the councillors insist
on this being done right back to June 1983, then I am not prepared
to continue with the link.
Once again the same old problem is back in the village, will this village never be clear of these illegal itinerants!
It is no good the parish council writing letters because they are normally totally ignored by the bureaucrats at County Hall. I have learnt from experience that the only way to get satisfaction is to go personally and make a nuisance of oneself at the County Hall.
I am totally surprised the police have allowed the caravans and
lorries to park at the end of Henley Road, as this I would consider
to be on a site line, therefore, under police powers they have the
right to insist these vehicles be moved.
As the people of Sandford have always said IT IS ONE LAW FOR THE
GYPSIES AND ONE LAW FOR THE RATE PAYERS.

As many of you will know, John Dell our community policeman has been forced to resign due to poor health. He has now moved away from the area and has gone to live in Kingsgate in Kent, where he has taken over a newsagent and confectionery shop. From all the people in Sandford we wish him well and every success in the future.
The area at the moment is being policed by the normal panda patrol
cars, however, it is hoped that a new community policeman will be
appointed in the near future. Community policing is a far better
system than having a number of different police officers patrolling.
He or she soon becomes a familiar face in the district who gets to

Elizabeth Burra has organised a concert in the village hall on Monday March 18th 1985 starting at 8.00 p.m.
It is hoped that as many of you as possible will attend. The last time she organised something like this it was an extremely enjoyable evening.
Bingo starts again on Thursday March 7th 1985 at 8.00 p.m.
It is a good night out for all the family and we hope that as many
will attend as possible.
MELTING MOMENTS
2½ oz lard
1½ oz margarine
3 oz caster sugar
half a standard egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
5 oz self-raising flour
1 oz rolled (porridge) oats
10 glade cherries
Prepare a moderate oven at 350F or gas mark 4. Brush two baking
sheets with melted fat or oil. Place fats and sugar in a bowl,
beat together with a wooden spoon until light and fluffy. Beat egg
with vanilla essence. Add to creamed mixture, a little at a time,
beating well after each addition. Fold in flour, to from a soft
dough.
Roll into walnut-sized balls with wet hands, dip in rolled
oats to coat. Place on baking sheets leaving room to spread, press
out Slightly. Top each with half a glace cherry. Bake in centre
of oven for 15-20 mins until pale golden brown. Leave on baking
sheet to cool completely.
These biscuits are a great favourite with any family and are very
nice for tea and toffee breaks. They keep well for two or three
weeks in an air-tight container.
HAZELNUT COOKIES.
6 oz wholemeal flour
4 oz margarine
4 oz sugar
3 oz hazelnuts coarsely ground
milk to mix
Rub the butter into the flour. Add the sugar and hazelnuts with
the milk to make a stiff dough. Roll out on a floured board. Cut
into small rounds and place on a greased cookie sheet, brush with
milk. Cook for 15-20 minutes in oven gas mark 4, 350F. This makes
about 40 cookies.
The Parish Council met on 11th February, and were glad to have 20 members of the public at the meeting. Mrs. King also came and we are very grateful to her and her husband for making the journey on such horrible roads. There was a good discussion of the plans for improvement at Temple Farm and many points were made. Individuals were encouraged to write personally to South Oxfordshire District Council Planning Department (West) to express their opinions. The Parish Council made the following points on your behalf:-
1. With regard to access to the site from Church Road, we considered this to be dangerous, even with improved sight-lines. Church Road is already too marrow for the increased traffic coming from the Mill Site and Kings Arms. The blind corner by Frys Barn is a danger. The access is opposite entrances to 4 private houses and a farm lane. Parking near the church narrows the road still further. The turning into Henley Road, from Church Road is also awkward and dangerous We consider the re-sited access ahead, agreed in Henley Road to be less dangerous.
2. The Parish Council expressed unanimous opposition to the of a shop to sell groceries on the site, as this would take valuable trade from our village shop and possibly lead to its closure, taking the Post Office with it.
We had no objection to the other plans put forward, to build two new toilet blocks and convert two barns for reception, games rooms and laundry facilities. We only asked for a guarantee that the materials used would be in keeping with the old buildings adjacent. The application was for toilet blocks built in concrete blocks, and the description of materials for the barns was very vague.
We would like to see a flourishing club at Temple Farm, but we must ensure that the buildings are of a high standard - not an economy job which will deteriorate rapidly leaving the site as unattractive as it is at present.
There was little other business of importance, but one battle
continues to prevent itinerants parking without permission on road
verges in Sandford.

Old Geordie Jones has been grounded by a heartless thief who stole
his bike, Now the 72-year-old pensioner cannot get out to the shops.
Geordie saved for months to buy an £88 Hercules cycle. When he went
to Woolworths, at Cowley, for his regular bag of toffees someone
swiped it. Now he is confined to his home at Main Avenue, Sandford.
"I always lock it up" said Geordie, "but this time I had left my
key in my other coat. I was only in the shop a couple of minutes.
It was the dearest bag of toffees I've ever bought".
Geordie, who suffers from chronic bronchitis and a stomach complaint, relies on his bicycle to get to shops because there is no adequate bus service.
Daughter-in-law Mrs Wendy Jones, 32, of Wey Road, Berinsfield, brings
Geordie stocks of food until a new bike can be found.

Our Baptism, wherein we were made 'Members of Christ, Children of God and Inheritors of the Kingdom of Heaven', is, for most of us, our Christian beginning. It is a Sacrament, effecting in us the birth of our spiritual life, our communion with Gods but it needs to be realised, made actual, in us by our response to this strengthened to full responsibility in Confirmation.
There may be young people here who are ready for Confirmation, or adults who, though baptized, have not yet been confirmed, and would like to know more about it. The preparation Consists of sharing together the Christian Story so that we are able to realise and enjoy renewal of life.
I shall be glad to arrange for separate preparation groups for young people as soon as convenient. Enrolment in such a group does not commit anyone to receiving Confirmation: that decision can only be taken as and when each individual feels able to make it; but a true decision cannot be made without some help in understanding what is involved.
Please let me know, either at the Church services at 10am and 6.30pm on Sundays, or here at home, of any who would like to join these preparation groups, giving address and telephone number. Mrs Hobbs of 27 Church Road, and Mrs Boyd of 18 Main Avenue, will be glad to pass on any names to me.
