MERRY CHRISTMAS

*****   PARISH COUNCIL NOTES   *****

We were glad to see some half dozen members of the public at our meeting, when one important item was a discussion on plans for the use of the Old Wharf Site at the bottom of Church Road. Several opinions were expressed, and in the end agreement was reached on preliminary plans, which could be revised in the future if necessary.

a) It was felt that any space for parking would simply encourage more people to come down Church Road and inevitably increase parking in the road. This will be properly controlled when the double yellow lines can be kept clear of mud.

b) The area would be fenced, possibly in a similar way to the Kings Arms car park, or by a crash barrier. Estimates for fencing are being sought.

c) Access would be through a small gate or gap for pedestrians and push chairs, not allowing room for cars to pass.

d) The existing locked gate will remain, to allow occasional access to the river for T.W.A. equipment. Two moorings have been let, and that was considered enough.

e) The area will be tidied up, grass cut and scrub cleared. Young trees and blackberry bushes would be left, and seats put on the river bank. The creek would also be cleared. Offers of seats and help with clearing the area will be very gratefully received.

*****   LAND ADJACENT TO RIVERVIEW   *****

Full discussion on the proper use of this land will be left till a later date, but estimates are being sought for fencing along the bottom to match that round the Wharf site. This would prevent illegal parking when the land dries out. We have heard from S.O.D.C. Planning Department that we would be most unlikely to get permission to build accommodation there, due to poor drainage and the fact that the land is in the 1947 flood plain. Any building there would also detract from the amenity of the houses in Riverview.

*****   TRAVELLERS PARKING ON JUNCTION WITH A423   *****

We are continuing to discuss ways of preventing this with Oxford County Council but it will be difficult until another permanent site has been agreed in the county.

SANDFORD LINK.

We would like to thank Mr. Boyd for editing the Link, and all those who help distribute it. Special thanks are due to Libby, who types the Link often in her spare time. We are very grateful to her.

GAS.

A new gas main is being laid in Church Road. The residents have been very impressed by the helpfulness and efficiency of the men doing the job. We thank them very much for sparing us much inconvenience from what has to be a messy job.

THE PARISH COUNCIL WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND 1985.

*****   DISTRICT COUNCILLORS NOTES   *****

Dear Editor,

I would like to say how much I appreciate you sending me a copy of your 'Sandford Link' every month. I think it is an excellent Parish Paper that seems to cover all the news and information necessary.

I would like to wish every one in Sandford a Very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Having attended most of the Parish Council meetings this year there is very little more to report except that I have managed to persuade the District Council to write to the County Council about the grass corner verges off the A423/Henley Road. Twice I have asked the County to try and remove the gypsies that park there - this is usually done by an officer attending as the Council officer has been assaulted by the gypsies in the past.

Four or five times this year I have asked the Technical Services Department of the South Oxfordshire District Council to clean up the mess left - and again this month there looks as if a complete caravan has been taken to pieces. I do hope that if we can put some pressure on the County we can try and achieve two things - firstly and most important, that South Oxfordshire becomes a Designated area and secondly that perhaps the Henley Road corner is trenched in order to stop the gypsies from parking there.

I think trenching is so unsightly and obviously they can't trench every verges in the county, but this particular one in Sandford seems to be in constant use these days. If anyone else agrees with me, perhaps they would also write to Mr. Peverel-Cooper of County Highways, Speedwell House, Speedwell Street, Oxford. I am sure that something could be done if the County realised that the Villagers of Sandford disliked the mess caused by these travelling itinerants.

NIKKI KING.

*****   FAREWELL TO NOBBY   *****

On the 31st of October last Norman Clarke - Lock Keeper at Sandford for 18 years took early retirement. Starting in May 1966, Nobby followed Percy Smith as Lock Keeper. During his 18 years many alterations were made to the lock and river channel - The Old Lock given hydraulic opening - a complete new Lock on the old Site and the removal of the old iron bridge and also the cutting of a new river channel, perhaps more alterations since the original 1632 lock was built. We wish him and his wife Silvia good luck in their new enterprise.

*****   SANDFORD-ON-THAMES YOUTH CLUB   *****

The village Youth Club has now been operating under new Management for a little over six months and in this time we have been able to increase our facilities to include:-

SNOOKER, POOL, 3 TABLE TENNIS TABLES, TELEVISION, SOFT BALL, AND VARIOUS OTHER INDOOR GAMES.
in this period of time our membership has doubled.

Unfortunately, a very small number of our members caused a certain amount of disruption, this as you will appreciate is not good for the youngsters who really enjoy themselves.

At a meeting on the 25th October the Youth Club Committee decided to close the Club for 2 weeks (31st October and 7th November) to combat the problem, we reopened the Club on the 14th November, using a new format.

Children will be requested to pay an Annual Membership of £1.00 and the weekly subs will be 20p, this will go towards equipment, hall rental and the purchase of new games.

On a lighter note, in the near future we hope to organize swimming club and various trips of interest to make their membership of the Club even more enjoyable.

MIKE NORTON.

May we just remind everyone that Christmas is a happy time when people go to a lot of parties etc. Please will everyone care for themselves and not DRINK AND DRIVE and to ensure safety for others, in not drinking and driving.

Cumberland Estates Partnership
22/11/1984
PROPOSED 'ONE WAY TRAFFIC SYSTEM', KILN PARK, SANDFORD-ON-THAMES.

WE HAVE DECIDED TO INTRODUCE A ONE WAY TRAFFIC SYSTEM ON THIS PARK, THE REASONS FOR THIS ARE AS FOLLOWS:-

1. PARKED VEHICLES ON PARK ROADS CAUSE BOTTLENECKS FOR 2 WAY TRAFFIC.

2. THE NARROWNESS OF ROAD BOTH ENDS OF THE CRESCENT.

3. WHEN THE S.O.D.C. ISSUED THE NEW PARK LICENCE IN JANUARY 1983 THEY SUGGESTED WE SHOULD INTRODUCE A ONE WAY SYSTEM AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE.

THERE IS A PLAN OF THE ONE WAY SYSTEM ON THE NOTICE BOARD AT THE PARK ENTRANCE.
THE TRAFFIC FLOW WILL BE IN AN ANTI-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION DUE MAINLY TO THE LARGE REFUSE LORRY NOW CLEARING THIS PARK IS UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE CORNERS IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION.

DRIVERS SHOULD TAKE SPECIAL CARE WHEN REJOINING MAIN AVENUE AS THEY CROSS OVER THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC FROM THE RIGHT.

*****   HORSE RIDING   *****

As we live in a rural community we have a higher than average number of horses on our roads and lanes.

In the past weeks I have seen a number of girls riding without hard hats. I appreciate they may consider they look more glamorous without hats but if they have any intelligence and consider safety before glamour they would wear a hat.

When I rode horses for a living in The Kings Troop R.H.A I was not allowed to ride without a hard hat at any time. The reason for this was that the only horse that is bomb proof is a dead one.

They should consider that riding a fifteen hand horse their head is approximately seven feet above the ground and should the horse rear and throw the rider, untold damage can be done to an unprotected head.

*****   FIREWORK NIGHT   *****

I would like to thank everyone who supported the Firework and Disco evening. Especially the people who made donations for the purchase of the fireworks. We made approximately £70 profit which will go to the Village Hall Fund.

I would like to think we could make this an annual event, and if all goes well the next one will be held on November 9th 1985.

*****   RACE TRACK   *****

Many times in the Link I have said about the gypsies using Brick Kiln Lane as a race track however, some of the Thames Water Board drivers are getting just as bad. The tanker drivers seem to appreciate the risks and the weight of their lorries and take it steady, but the drivers of some of the smaller vehicles seem to go faster than is wise. I hope the management will take the trouble to point out the danger and also point out the speed limit on this road to these cowboy drivers.

*****   BIRTHS   *****

To Diane & Mervyn Harris a daughter Keeley on October 28th. We send our congratulations on the birth of a lovely daughter.

*****   POEM BY MISS HEIDI BOYD   *****

'The last leaves of Autumn still float beneath the trees,
Yet Christmas has almost descended upon the Earth once more.
Another page in the diary of Creation has been written;
Recording forever the same Human blend of heartbreak, happiness,
Love, anger and hope
As every passing year.

Yuletide brings with it a time of peace, so very brief,
And nations are united;
People rejoice as one,

Their children blessed with an aura of joyousness and excitement.
While the carols of many choirs can be heard, like angels before them,

Proclaiming with glory

The birth of Jesus Christ.'
HEIDI BOYD.

*****   COOKERY CORNER   *****

pour over the liquid from the fruit. Wrap in foil of greaseproof. Leave for a few weeks to mature.

*****   POLICE UNCERTAINTY   *****

It seems that the police at Cowley operate two different laws, one for the rate paying citizens and one for the gypsies.

You will remember all the problems we had with the gypsies on the bank and how they never had any tax discs on their vehicles, how the police told us there was very little they could do as Brick Kiln Lane was not a public highway. It now appears that Sgt. Robinson is saying other police at Cowley were making a mistake that tax discs can be checked at any time and any where.

At least now we know the police are inconsistent with their attitude towards the gypsies and villagers.

Each month the Sandford Link is sent to Cowley police Station and I hope one of the police officers will write and explain why this inconsistency has lasted for so long.

It is to be hoped that the police can sort out this ambiguity in the law so that a rift does not develop and that we will still be able to have total confidence in the police fairness.
