WHARF SITE.
Our next meeting is on the 26th November, and we would like to have a full
discussion then on possible uses for this site. Please come to that
meeting at 8 pm to put forward your views or ask questions. It is no
use complaining after discussions have been made.
MILL SITE.
It is good to see the work going ahead past there. We have received
the proposed numbering for the houses, which seems very comforting. We
have asked the authorities to reconsider the plan. The Parish Council has
acquired the old deeds concerning the Mill Site. They are very interesting
and anyone who would like to see them should contact Mrs. Heery.
We look forward to seeing many you on 26th November.

Passage through these locks was always difficult and dangerous, the process of removing paddles prom the lock and either pulling or hauling boats through against the strong stream, or riding the flash on the downstream journey. Such a lock meant a (treat loss of water often leaving the upper reaches dry or low in water for days, boats then having to wait until the water had risen again enough for further passage.
Clearly with the increase in traffic, these conditions could not continue as not only was the water-borne traffic slowed down - perhaps for days on end, it also caused the mills on the river to cease working, due to lack of water. Under the Oxford and Rurcott Commission, the modern Pound Lock, having upper and lower mitre gates, was introduced to the Thames, firstly in three places:- Swift-ditch near Abingdon, Iffley, and Sandford, which was probably the first around 1632.
The site of this old lock has now been filled in, but it's position can still be seen alongside the present lock. Originally it was 87 ft in length but in 1793 was lengthened to 120 ft. If one looks on the upstream side of the footbridge, the position of the upper gates can still be seen in the stonework. A new lock on the present site was opened in September 1936 and it was much the original structure that was removed to build our present lock in 1972 - 3.

I again remind motorist to take extra care when parking, so as to avoid obstructing the footways and to bear in mind, that as none of the roads in Sandford-on-Thames are subject to a 30MPH speed limit, it is an offence to park a vehicle on the highway during the hours of darkness, unless the vehicle is on the correct side of the road and displaying lights.
On the lighter side of winter is the forthcoming "Bonfire" night with the
joys of firework displays. In the right location and at the right time
those pleasures are enjoyed by most, but the practice of lighting
fireworks in the streets causes elderly persons and family pets a great
deal of alarm and distress. I therefore ask parents to remind their
children of the correct use and dangers when handling fireworks.

The Bishop of Oxford is coming to evensong on December 9th at 6.30 pm. If you don't want the church to close, put this date in your diary. The future of Sandford Church as you know it hangs in the balance, and already the Church Commissioners want to sell the Vicarage. If you oppose these plans, attend church services as often as you can, and make your views known to the church wardens, Mr. C. Pitson and Mr. T. Bennett.
Services are Parish Communion 10.00 am and Evensong 6.30 pm.
ORGANIST REQUIRED.
St. Andrews Sandford requires an organist for choral evensong. The
service is traditional and we have a young enthusiastic choir, for details
of fees and other information please phone Barbara Hobbs on Oxford 779715.
