| Issue no 33. | September 1984 |
As one of the action committee, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to the Kiln Park Residents Association who extended their financial support.
Just enough money has been left in the special bank account to keep it
open just in case South Oxfordshire District Council go back on their
word.
It is to be hoped by the next edition of The Sandford Link, that the
Parochial Church Council will have been able to supply news about the
future of the Church in Sandford.

Dodgson and his friends, possibly Alice Liddell herself, were on a river expedition to Nuneham Park, when they were caught in a thunderstorm. Returning hurriedly to Sandford they made their way to the School House, where the Vicar, the Reverend W.H. Ranken had rooms and there Dodgson's friends were left in the care of Mary Broughton, the school-mistress, to get their clothes dry. From this episode, (for those who are familiar with the works of 'Lewis Carroll'), came the inspiration of the 'Pool of tears', and the School House, where the mouse originally proceeded with it's tale.
Lewis Carroll was quite familiar with Sandford, often visiting his old University friend, the Reverend William Henry Ranken who was Vicar of Sandford from 1862 to 1867. He also held the living of Radley as had his brother C. E. Ranken, probably living at the Vicarage there.
On Saturday 7th June of the same year on one of their country walks,
probably to Radley, Dodgson undertook to preach at the Evening Service
at Sandford the next day. Walking was no great trouble to these athletic
Victorians, indeed it was then the quickest way between Radley and
Sandford. As the events of Sunday 8th June record, Dodgson writes
'went to morning service at Iffley, lunched with the Rumseys, walked
on to Sandford, then to Radley with Ranken, dined there and returned
to Sandford'. He returned in time for the Evening Service.
'I had to refer to the headings constantly'. One wonders what the villagers of the time thought of this strange nervous man who preached to them on this Whitsunday so long ago.

| Ingredients:- |
7-9 medium-thick slices stale white, brown or granary bread. 1½-2 lb mixed soft fruit (raspberries, loganberries, blackberries, black, red and white currants, strawberries) 6 - 8 oz castor sugar. |
| Method:- |
Cut off the crusts and, putting two slices of bread aside
use the rest to line a 1½-2 pint greased pudding basin. (make breadcrumbs from the discarded crusts by drying them slowly in the oven or liquidising them). Prepare the fruit. Half the raspberries, loganberries. Leave whole if small or halve the larger ones. Wash and drain well. Place the fruit in a large saucepan and add the sugar and 4tbsp. water. Bring slowly to the boil and cook for just 2-3 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fruit to the lined pudding basin with just enough juice to cover the fruit. Make sure the bread lining the sides remains upright and does not collapse. Cover the fruit with the remaining slices of bread. Place a saucer or small plate on top so it fits inside the rim of the basin and acts as a seal, Weight the saucer to encourage the juice to soak into the bread. Refrigerate overnight. |
| To Serve:- | Slowly turn the basin upside down on to a serving plate. |
