WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY EASTER |
I apologize that the March issue of the Sandford Link was such a
shambles. The reason for this being I had my wife in hospital, I
then got behind with the Link and had to use a commercial photo-copies
in an attempt to produce the Link before the 5th March.

It appears the South Oxfordshire District Council have no inclination to prevent the dumping of rubbish. Miss Burra, chairman of the Parish Council, spoke to the gypsies on the bank about their rubbish and was told basically to mind her own business. She did report the dumping of litter to the police, who assured her they would see the gypsies about moving it. As usual the police, did their level best to avoid assisting the rate paying populace of Sandford.
Since I contacted the Police Superintendent on Friday 16th March, statements have been taken with view to possible prosecution.
It is hoped that South Oxfordshire District Council has attempted
to alleviate the problem of toxic fires on Ten Acre Site. Each
resident has received a letter from the South Oxfordshire District
Council stating that if they create toxic smoke the South Oxfordshire
District Council will have no hesitation in taking them to court.

May I remind you once again of the Prayer Book rubric which says: "And note that every parishioner shall communicate at the least three times in the year, of which Easter to be one". passiontide begins with Passion Sunday on April 8th, when we shall be having our customary special service of nine lessons, music and prayers at 6.30pm. I hope that as many as can do so will come to this service as a large congregation is an encouragement to our choristers who have to work hard to prepare for it.
On April 9th there is the Annual Vestry Meeting, which has been brought forward from after Easter owing to the late date of Easter this year. This meeting is at 7.30pm in the Vestry and is open to all those who are on the Electoral Roll of this church and therefore eligible to vote for the church officers and members of the Parochial Church Council for the ensuing year.
In the same week, on Saturday 14th, is our annual
Spring Bazaar, which will be held in the Village Hall at 2.30pm. We
shall be very grateful for help in preparing for this and with the
various stalls on the day itself. Above all, we ask you all to come
along and support this event and bring some friends or acquaintances
with you.
We are still collecting bundles of newspapers to help with the Churches finances - but may I reiterate my appeal to those who bring them to tie them with string rather than leave them loose as loose papers are somewhat of a nuisance when loading them on to the collecting van.
I think it is perhaps not generally understood that parish priests are specifically asked by the powers that be not to baptise babies from other parishes unless the parents can produce a note from their local vicar to say that he has no objection to their child being baptised elsewhere. Personally, I do Not Mind baptising babies from outside provided that I receive such a note from the other vicar. The point is that it is considered better that a child should be baptised by the priest who has responsibility for his or her spiritual upbringing i.e. the local vicar.
I am pleased to say that Mrs. Boyd appears to be making good recovery after her recent spell in hospital and we shall look forward to seeing her back at the organ as soon as she feels well enough to play.
I wish you all a happy Easter and hope to see all confirmed members
at the altar on Easter morning.

Further south along the Henley Road towards Wallingford, the turning which now runs down under the Sandford Link, was originally an ancient lane known and called by an earlier still (in 1798). 'Crab Gate Lane' is recorded. Although a number of Crab apple trees grew along the lane, particularly near the Eastern end, the names origin owes nothing to these, although folk memory associated the two. It appears that in the early seventeenth century. this old way had at it's end or somewhere along it's length, a Clap Gate or what to-day, would be called a 'Kissing gate', which is a gate opening between two posts, this then was the origin of the old name, so much for the vagaries of the oral tradition.
The lane probably opened out into unfenced fields in particular to "Stone Pit Piece". Here were the pits from which the village building and road mending stone was obtained, the position of the last remaining pit can be seen from a small clump of Fir trees to the left of the Sewage Works entrance.
When the brickworks opened in 1900, the old lane became to be called
'Brick Kiln Lane' by which name it was known until the construction of
the Sandford Link.

1. Where is it? What is it for? |
1. The religious dame referred to in the stone plaque above the entrance
to St. Andrews church is ELIZA ISHAM. She was a local benefactor who
donated the money for the building of the church porch in 1652.
Her
name is still in use today as a co-founder of the charity for the poor
of Sandford Parish, that is the ISHAM-MAYHEW FUND. This fund is
administered by three members of parish.
2. When was the church in Sandford built?
There is no specific date - there have been many alterations and
additions over the centuries. However its origins are early Norman -
laid down in the 11th century. There was then the "new" porch built
in 1652 (see above); major Victorian alterations constructed by
J. Derick in 1840 including the 'Norman' design tower; the N. aisle
added by J. Brooks in 1865 and the vestry built in 1893.
