The Link

Issue no 20.July 1983

*****   EDITORS REPORT   *****

As a result of the election that took place on the 9th June 1983, Mr. Michael Heseltine was elected as member of parliament for the constituency which includes Sandford Parish.

A new addition to the Sandford Link is the Trade Adverts. As the Parish Council is only in a position to subsidise part of the costs of the Link, the rest of the money is being born by the kindness of traders and of business people who live in the village. If any local person wishes to put a trade advert in the Sandford Link, please contact me and I will pop along and see you. The charge is very minimal. Apart from the adverts I am most grateful to the manager of the 'Kings Arms', Sandford, for his donation towards the extra cost.

This issue will be the first and only time that I will ever pass comment on Mr. Robinson and his new 'Sandford News'. The letter printed in his news sheet was certainly not the same letter written by me. May I respectfully suggest that he learns to reproduce letters as they are actually written, without his highlights, emphasis and paragraphing.

REWARD £25

I am prepared to pay anyone the sum of £25 for information leading to the conviction of the mindless morons who desecrated the village graveyard. It cannot be considered that the children are responsible, it must have been teenagers or adults. Any information should be given to P.C. Dell, at Cowley Police Station, on Oxford 777501, or if you contact me I will pass it on to the police.

B.E.M. FOR FORMER VILLAGER

Former villager Mr. Charlie Pitson, who is a serving member of the Thames Valley Police Force and whose parents still live in the village, has been awarded the B.E.M. in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Mr. Pitson, who is a member of the Police Federation and has been so for almost twenty years, is now the assistant secretary to the Thames Valley branch of the federation.

He said "I am extremely pleased and honoured to get the award, but I am yet to be told the reason for receiving it, and feel it is not only a personal honour but an honour to the Police Federation".

We send him our warmest congratulations.

May I thank everybody for the dictionaries sent to me. I have now learnt how to spell 'recipe'.

*****   SANDFORD YOUTH GROUP   *****

Once again I am glad to report that the Youth Group continues to flourish and on average we have a weekly attendance of 42-47 children, the larger number being the junior section. Our last fund-raising disco was a great success and it is hoped to have another in the future, providing we can once again get the help needed to run one. We entered three teams in the "Fun Day" at Peers School on Sunday 12th June 1983. The response from our members was somewhat disappointing as only eleven of our members turned up on the day despite the long list of names I had of those wishing to take part. However, we were able to co-opt some spare children to make up our three teams and a good day was had by all, with our older girls team winning their section. Well done to all those who took part.

We had planned a sponsored swim for this month, but we have now had to postpone it until September. In the pipeline are trips to Richmond Ice Rink, Alton Towers and a day trip to Butlins, the dates have yet to be finalised and I will keep you informed. In the Autumn we hope to hold an Autumn cum Open Day when I hope to see you all.

I am very sad to report that we will be losing one of our helpers, Sarah Kelly, at the end of June. May I take this opportunity to thank her for her valuable help. We still remain very desperate for help on club evenings even more so as our club expands. Any help would be appreciated, even for just an hour a month. It would be nice if parents (or anyone else who is interested) would look in to see what we do; you are all welcome. After all they are your kids and they are a great bunch.
Dian Slay
Chairperson.
