SOUTH OXFORDSHIRE DIST. COUNCIL.
A 1½ page report from Dist. Councillor
Mrs. Nicola King has been received for the
half year in office, and covers the 6
parishes she represents.
Opening remarks and that concerning Sandford
are as follows:-
District Council by Nikki King.
"South Oxfordshire Dist. Council is the
largest Dist. Council in England with 59
members, and covering a great variety of
constituent areas, from Urban, suburban,
to truly rural. During my first 6 months I
have been involved in many issues concerned
with environmental and community problems".
POLLUTION.
Many people from Sandford
telephoned about the foul smell from the
sewage works. It was quite appalling and
attracted swarms of flies. I asked the
Environmental Health officer to arrange a
public meeting with the Thames Water
Authority. The meeting was held on 7th. July,
and the Water Authority explained that the
cause of the "stink" was the failure of the
'Digestion' pump. It is now being completely
overhauled, and normal working is expected
to resume in November.
WATER was also the cause of many complaints
from local people including kidney patients,
who felt that something was wrong with our
water. On checking, I discovered that the
Water Authority were carrying out tests to
correct algae levels at the reservoir. They
readily agreed to complete these operations
at speed, and normal water supplies were
soon resumed.
Finally, it is a great shame that the County
Council are cutting back on the RURAL HOME
ECONOMICS FACILITY for the W.I. As this
is a County Council matter I have made known
our views to Mr. Charles Farrell, but know
that little can be done at this late stage.
I know it has only been 6 months, but I find
District Council work very involving and
interesting, so if any individual or group
feel I can help, YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND ME.
