SANDFORD LINK

Issue No. 10.September 1982.

Quotation of the month

"From each according to their means,
To each according to their needs."
G. B. Shaw.

"Sandford Link"
As there was no issue for August, one would have thought that there would be quite a lot of news items to report, but it seems that is not so.
In distributing this newsheet each month, I rely and expect the information to be sent or phoned to my address, and as to future issue, it will be sent out quarterly, unless the information is forthcoming.
I thank those who in the past have let me know what is happening in the village your views and opinions are welcome for publication if not of a controversial nature, this is your newsheet make use of it.

ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH
There has been an outbreak of vandalism in the churchyard in recent weeks, vases and even tombstones being moved. One wonders just what kind of mind these 'people' have if any. They must be teenagers at least, if not older, because it takes a considerable amount of strength to move a tombstone. It is, of course, symptomatic of the lack of discipline in the homes and schools in which they grew up. (I won't say in which they were brought up!)
The only way to combat this is by exercising constant vigilance. It is up to who can see the churchyard from their homes to keep an eye on it - especially in the late evenings - and if they notice anything suspicious to inform either Cowley Police Station or me at once. The police have been informed that this is going on and have called round to see me about it. The telephone number of Cowley Police is Oxf. 777501 and my number is Oxf. 778369. It is naturally distressing for the families whose graves are tampered with and every effort should be made to catch those responsible.

The result of the Summer Pate was very gratifying - £275 - and I would like to thank all who helped both with the preparations and on the stalls and all who came along and gave their support. The total was about £80 up on that of last year.

Donald Fehrenbach

CARNIVAL 1982.
The village carnival committee wish to inform the public that the aerobatic display as advertised in the programme, had to be cancelled because permission was not granted by the police for such a display in this area, Admission charges were reduced to 25 pence because of this, they extend their apologies.
Attendance at the carnival was nearly 800, first prize in the big draw was won by Mr. F. Jenner a portable B/W television set. Littlemore Rugby Club were the winners of the Tug-of-War contest, beating our local team from the "Fox". Money raised amounted to £650, which will help towards the cost of making the car park.

Ten Acre Caravan Site
Work continues to be carried out at the site with fencing in place. The warden will be in charge sometime in September, as promised way back in the 1970s in the original proposals, by the old Bullingdon R.D.C. that is progress somewhat.

THIS IS SACRILEGE
Having spoken to one of the families affected by the vandalism in Sandford church yard, when grave headstones had been removed, it must be further stated the seriousness of these actions, and outlined by the Rev. Fehrenbach of St. Andrews Church.
Yes everyone nearby must be vigilant, and not to be afraid of naming the culprits, you will, and should be given full support from responsible local people, if we wish to stop vandalism. Recently at Iffley wanton destruction to the old stone bridge by kicking away the supporting balustrades, luckily they were caught, also about £3000 worth of windows were broken at Littlemore.
Referring to Sandford, are the vandals aware that Churches, and burial grounds are sacred places, and any act of vandalism is known as SACRILEGE

Mothers and Toddlers Group.
On the 10th. Aug. a free Pizza lunch was given to all those attending their Jumble sale, which enabled the group to raise about £75, the proceeds will be used to renew equipment including a nursery trampoline. This is a fine effort, which is to be congratulated upon.

Planning Applications.
Passing the Littlemore Community centre in Giles Rd., it was noticed that a weekly list of planning applications are displayed on the notice board. This also creates interest in local affairs, and could be emulated by our local parish Council, along with other matters, and dates of when meetings take place, they could then be published in the local newsheet, for the benefit of all who are interested in local matters.

A REMINDER.
If you want to vote in next years local elections, and who knows with the state the country is in possibly a GENERAL ELECTION, make sure you fill in the form Register of Electors 1983
A VERY LOCAL EFFORT.
Lack of volunteers to cut down overgrown hedges surrounding the village hall has been overcome by the use of one of natures lawn mowers, a GOAT, which is a little less "BOVER THAN A HOVER" (with apologies to Qualcast Lawnmowers Ltd.) If you wish to acquire the services of a GOAT, yes you have guessed right, contact Mrs. H. Hutton, Crappers Caravan site Sandford.

St. Andrews Church.
The Floral display held in the Church on carnival day, was a great success. Congratulations must be extended to all those who helped in raising much needed funds.
A musical concert will be held in the Village Hall on Sat. 18th. Sept. at 8-00. The Jubilee Brass Band, and The Operatic Society will give a programme of light music. Tickets will be £1.

Next Issue.
Items YOU want to include in OCTOBER, should be received by 21st. September. Brief written details, or Phone Ox. 779693, to 15 Henley Rd.
