Quotation of the month

"Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly"

A NEW SCHOOL FOR SANDFORD.
A timber building has been constructed Ten Acre caravan site measuring approx 40 x 20 feet, by one of the residents. When asked what purpose it was for, he replied that it was a school for the caravan site children.
It must also be pointed out to those in authority that the PERMITTED number of caravans is 20, but about 30 or more families are using this site. Also the promised full-time warden has still not arrived, and the adjoining Kiln park residents are with holding payment of rates until this has been implemented.
Perhaps South Oxfordshire Dist. Council will carry out these promises eventually, but dont put the flags out when they do until you have obtained PLANNING PERMISSION FIRST.

ITS GOT TO GO.
A landmark in Sandford since 1900 the old brickworks chimney has got to be demolished for safety reasons, a double crack at the base, and also one visible at the top.

STOP PRESS
Families are now living in the new school at Ten Acre site, What about it PLANNERS?

A GOOD SPOT FOR DROWNING.
The recent report of another drowning at Sandford, (Oxford Times May 21st.) must serve to remind us how dangerous this stretch of the river can still be.
It is not without good reason that Jerome K. Jerome in his well known story "Three men in a boat" headed a chapter - "A good spot for drowning" when writing of Sandford. Throughout the centuries fatalities have been recorded, such as when an unknown man found drowned at Sandford-Ferry, the witty coroner of the time, named him as John Muchwater. A Christ Church student was drowned while attempting to "shoot" the lashers in a boat.

John Beckly the lockeepers son was drowned while taking fish from a trap on the big lasher. Christ Church Students have figured in a number of fatal Accidents in the larger pool, a favourite place for swimming in the 19th century. In 1921 three students, one of these being Michael Lewellin Davis the adopted son of J. M. Barrie of Peter Pan fame, all these in the months of April, May and June.

There are many others, where names were not known or unidentified, in nearly all above cases, the inquests were held at the "Kings Arms"
By - "ARJACE".

OXFORD CITY SEWERAGE WORKS
It seems inevitable that the smell will continue from the plant for sometime, until the digestion tanks have been renewed.
The untreated sewage having to be stored until completed, is the cause of the smell. Commiseration to those nearest effected by it, but there are no health risks from it.

St. ANDREW'S CHURCH
In recent months the inside walls of the church have been given a much-needed face-lift. One wall, which has been affected d by damp, has had to be replastered. This has now been done but it still has to be painted. It is generally agreed that the new colour is an improvement and gives a warmer effect. Our thanks are due to Mesers, Harris (D), Crickmay and Partridge for this decidedly arduous task. We could do with one or two more stalwarts who would give a hand at mowing the churchyard during the summer months. The area is considerable and is really too much for one or two men to cope with. Any volunteers please see Mr. Crickmay, No 1. Henley Rd.

The next event is the annual summer fete, which this year will be held on Sat. JULY 10th, in the village hall and recreation ground, weather permitting, please turn up and give us your support. There will be various sideshows in the field.

There seems to he some uncertainty regarding conditions for Baptism. The rule of the Church is that godparents should he confirmed members of the Church of England. Next to the parents, they are expected to help in the spiritual upbringing of the children so they should he people who have an understanding of the belief in the Christian Faith. We do not refuse Baptism to a child if confirmed godparents are unobtainable - but we do ask parents, for the sake of the children, to do their best to appoint responsible godparents.

We still need more singers for the choir. Surely there must be some people in the village and caravan park who enjoy singing? even if they can only manage one of the services on Sundays it would be a help. We have a repertoire of interesting music, it isn't just hymns and chants. We would welcome both young people and adults. If they can already read music so much the better - but this is not necessary.

Rev. D. J. Fehrenbach.
