QUOTATION OF THE MONTH

Printers' ink is the great Apostle of progress, who's pulpit is the Press.

PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council entered a contest for the best contribution to the International Year of the Disabled, their contribution was to provide 2 extra toilets in the new Village Hall with access for invalid and disabled chairs, and although it did not win the £200 prize, the principle is worthy of some praise.

Articles for sale can be donated on 50-50 basis, towards the Village Hall Fund by advertising in this newsheet

Forty new chairs have been purchased by the parish Council for use in the hall.

KILN PARK CARAVANS
Fire completely burnt out the caravan of Mrs. Chambers who had only settled in some 6 months previously, but the spirit of true neighbourhood was shown by a door-to-door collection made by the Residents by collecting £84.50 which would help in her immediate needs.

Residents of Kiln Park site wish it to be known to the Authority, their intention of withholding payment of rates if the full time warden has not been appointed, and working on the site as promised by the South Oxfordshire District Council.

MR. ROBINSON'S INTRODUCTION LETTER
A lot of water has passed through Sandford Lock since I last had the opportunity to write to all Sandford residents; that was in 1959 at the end of my term of 3 years as your Rural District Councillor this was my report to the Ratepayers concerning all and everything that had taken place for that period concerning Sandford. Quoting from that report, I wrote "In sending you this report I hope I have set a precedent for future representatives on the District Council".

The Council never, to my knowledge, issued any information to the Ratepayer in those days, apart from that issued by the Area Medical Officer which never reached the Ratepayers. Some two years following they issued an information booklet with the rate demand form. This brings me to the present, in which I have the opportunity to keep you up to date with what is happening generally. I hope you will let me know of anything you want published in the Sandford Link. I believe letting people know what is happening is a good thing for all concerned. Hoping to be hearing from you, and keep the 'LINK' unbroken.

Yours sincerely,
A. ROBINSON

Another tree has been presented by Miss Burra and planted. We trust parents will encourage all children who use the playing area not to damage these young trees, that will one day make the village more beautiful for everyone's benefit.

ST. ANDREWS CHURCH

The language in which the New Testament was first written was Greek - and when we translate direct from the Greek into modern English we often find that this brings out shades of meaning that have been obscured in the familiar Authorised Version of 1611. The word 'ecclesia', for instance, is translated 'church' in the A.V. - but this doesn't mean what the vast majority of people understand by 'church' today. Nowadays to the average person it means either the local parish church building or the hierarchy of bishops or senior clerics who as it were, 'run the show'. Ecciesia in the New Testament, however, doesn't mean either of these things; it means a group of Christian people assembled together - usually for worship - and, in those days, for 'the Breaking of Bread', that is, Holy Communion.

Today we need to bear in mind this true meaning of ecclesia. 'The Church' consists of all baptised persons. If you have been baptised (or Christened) you are a member of the Church of Christ, whether you attend public worship or not. The Church is not a collection of bishops: it is you and me. All societies need useful members - people who will help to forward the aims of the particular society, using whatever gifts or talents they possess. Christ needs useful members of His Church today - to help carry on the work He began during His ministry on earth.

Are you doing anything to help? Sandford Church could do with a revival of its Sunday School but we need a teacher. We need more singers for the choir, especially adults. We need two or three boys or men to carry the processional cross at services. We could do with one or two organisations - but we need lay people to run them. We could do with more young people on the Parochial Church Council. Will you think about these things and see if you can help.

Donald Fehrenbach

OBITUARIES

Since the last Edition of "Sandford Link", it is our sad duty to report the deaths of two members of old Sandford families:

On March 29th Mrs. Tucker of the "Glen" aged 77, after a short illness. Known to older villagers as Daisy Evans she was a typical countrywoman, who delighted in her poultry, a setting of chickens or geese could nearly always be seen in her garden, a member of Sandford Forget-Me-Not Club, and regular domino player. Her familiar figure will be missed by all.

Also, on Friday, 16th April, Curly (Cecil) Stone, aged 76. Although living in Littlemore for a number of years a regular visitor to the village, a live sportsman he played both cricket and football for Sandford in his early days. The youngest son of William and Caroline Stone, and the last survivor of their family.
