Another tree has been presented by Miss Burra and planted. We trust parents will encourage all children who use the playing area not to damage these young trees, that will one day make the village more beautiful for everyone's benefit.
A dog show is planned for
12th September.
get well soon - and we hope to be seeing you at the Carnival again. |
The language in which the New Testament was first written was Greek - and when we translate direct from the Greek into modern English we often find that this brings out shades of meaning that have been obscured in the familiar Authorised Version of 1611. The word 'ecclesia', for instance, is translated 'church' in the A.V. - but this doesn't mean what the vast majority of people understand by 'church' today. Nowadays to the average person it means either the local parish church building or the hierarchy of bishops or senior clerics who as it were, 'run the show'. Ecciesia in the New Testament, however, doesn't mean either of these things; it means a group of Christian people assembled together - usually for worship - and, in those days, for 'the Breaking of Bread', that is, Holy Communion. Today we need to bear in mind this true meaning of ecclesia. 'The Church' consists of all baptised persons. If you have been baptised (or Christened) you are a member of the Church of Christ, whether you attend public worship or not. The Church is not a collection of bishops: it is you and me. All societies need useful members - people who will help to forward the aims of the particular society, using whatever gifts or talents they possess. Christ needs useful members of His Church today - to help carry on the work He began during His ministry on earth.
Are you doing anything to help? Sandford Church could do
with a revival of its Sunday School but we need a teacher.
We need more singers for the choir, especially adults. We
need two or three boys or men to carry the processional
cross at services. We could do with one or two
organisations - but we need lay people to run them. We could do
with more young people on the Parochial Church Council.
Will you think about these things and see if you can help.
Since the last Edition of "Sandford Link", it is our sad duty to report the deaths of two members of old Sandford families: On March 29th Mrs. Tucker of the "Glen" aged 77, after a short illness. Known to older villagers as Daisy Evans she was a typical countrywoman, who delighted in her poultry, a setting of chickens or geese could nearly always be seen in her garden, a member of Sandford Forget-Me-Not Club, and regular domino player. Her familiar figure will be missed by all.
Also, on Friday, 16th April, Curly (Cecil) Stone, aged 76.
Although living in Littlemore for a number of years a
regular visitor to the village, a live sportsman he played
both cricket and football for Sandford in his early days.
The youngest son of William and Caroline Stone, and the
last survivor of their family.
