PARISH DISCUSSES DEVELOPMENT PLANS

Twenty-six parishioners, two Local Councillors, three members of the Parish Council and Planning experts from Oxford City and S.O.D.C. braved the elements on Wednesday, 18th November and attended a meeting in the Village Hall to discuss proposals for various developments in and around Sandford.
Mr. N. Lyzba (S.O.D.C.) and Mr. P. Rowbottom (Oxford City) outlined their Council's draft proposals as they would affect Sandford in the context of the County Structure Plan and other Local Plans.

Objections were raised to the designation of the Brickworks site for residential use and that planning permission for light industrial use had been refused. Mr. Lyzba promised to re-examine this. It was pointed out that benefits to Sandford might accrue from the Oxford City Blackbird Leys development suggestion as the new road would improve access, more recreation land would be available, also, possibly jobs from the 'Industrial Park' and there was the chance of another bus service. The Parish Council once again put in a plea for some elderly persons accommodation in the village and in conjunction with Littlemore P.C. asked for public access to the river - perhaps linked with the development of the proposed Heyford Hill housing sites.

Doubts were also expressed about increasing the size of the Blackbird Leys Estate. It was also felt that, while technically in help, Sandford Parish, the new housing Suggested would be twice the size of the present village, be separated from it by the Link Road and the proposed industrial site, and that these factors would make it very difficult to integrate the development into Sandford Parish.

Our Club was formed in December 1979 so that Sandford youngsters had a Club of their own. We are an independent Club, having no paid Youth Workers, or sponsored by any organisations. We do occasionally receive grants from various sources but most of our expenses and equipment are financed by Fund Raising within the Group.

Apart from normal Club activities such as Table Tennis, Snooker, etc. we have Disco's using our own equipment (which members purchased by Fund Raising efforts). We hope to have some outings in the New Year. Some of our older members are looking into the possibilities of constructing a Hovercraft or 'Sand Buggy'.

We are holding a Disco on December 4th for 12-18's. Tickets 50p. (Adults wanted to help on this night please.)

We are always looking for Adult especially parents to become involved in helping to run the Club and its needs. The only experience needed is a lot of patience and stamina! (And, of course, enthusiasm.)

If you want further information about the Club, please contact:-
DON EDWARDS (Chairman)
STAN COTTEN (Treasurer)
GWEN ABSOLOM (Secretary)

The Kings Arms
ST. ANDREWS
We are now on the threshold of a new Church Year, which begins on November 29th, Advent Sunday. It is a time to make a new beginning in our religious life and to resolve that in the new Church Year we will try to witness more effectively to our faith amongst those around us in our everyday lives.

On Advent Sunday evening we shall be having our special service of readings, Advent carols and hymns based on the ancient liturgies and adapted from the Advent Carol Service used in King's Chapel, Cambridge. We have had this service for several years now and, so far, it has been attended by at least 40 people. I hope the same will happen this year because this service conveys the Advent message far more effectively than a sermon. Will you also make a note that the date and time of the festival service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas is 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, December 27th.

Christmas is one of the three Great Festivals of the Church, when all confirmed members should come to receive the Holy Communion. There will be a said celebration at 8 a.m. and a sung Eucharist at 10 a.m. On the Sunday after Christmas, St. John's Day, there will be sung Eucharist at 10 a.m. and the Carol Service at 6.30 p.m. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and hope to see you at the Church on Christmas Day.

Donald Fehrenbach.

FORGET-ME-NOTS
Please note that meetings are held every other Tuesday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. For further details contact Mrs. M. Harris, 24 Henley Road, Tel: Oxford 777900
CHARLES AND DI AT THE KINGS ARMS
The King's Arms at Sandford Lock has seen a change of Licensee. Since Mr. Martin retired from the trade, Courage Brewery has taken the Pub into management with the view to developing the Kings Arms to provide greater leisure facilities in connection with the river. Plans have not as yet been finalised, but if all goes well the alterations should be impressive - providing Sandford with a Pub to rival the Trout at Godstow. But we are talking of two year's hence.

Charles Henderson with his wife Di are the NEW LICENSEES who have moved here after three and a half years in Reading. They are local people having previously lived in Noke, and Di is a Kidlington girl born and bred. Charles is particular about being known as the Licensee as he feels although he might be a Manager, people should be able to expect the same treatment from whichever Pub they happen to be in. Di, unfortunately, is not much in evidence, having her hands full with 3-month old twin boys.

Gina Ashburner.

COUNCIL MATTERS
Abstracts from P.C. Meeting 10th November 1981. As part of a £30,000 improvement scheme to the Ten Acres site, S.O.D.C. have applied for planning permission (No.SQ/N/613/81) for an extension to Sanitary Block to Plot 16 to provide office for site warden. Also for provision of site entrance and boundary bollards to prohibit the unauthorised entrance or exit of caravans.
Following much discussion the P.C. felt that the proposed fencing would be unsuitable for containing the activities of the travellers within the bounds of their site, and have asked S.O.D.C. to reconsider their plans.
