February 2010
Dear ResidentSandford Lock access bridge: bridge deck refurbishment and footpath diversion I am writing to let you know about a large engineering project due to start near you on 22 March 2010. I want to explain what we are doing, why we are doing it and how it will affect you. Where is the work taking place? At Sandford Lock access bridge which crosses Sandford weir stream on the River Thames, approximately three kilometres south of Oxford city centre. The bridge, which was built in the 1970s, provides access to Sandford Lock, and is part of the Thames Path National Trail. When is this work happening? Work is due to start on 22 March 2010 and will take approximately 10-12 weeks to complete, and should finish by 15 June 2010. Why are we doing this work? The current weight limit of the bridge has reduced to three tonnes from 18 tonnes following a recent assessment. The new weight limit is no longer enough to carry vehicles that need to get to the lock, and the bridge deck is also in poor condition. We therefore need to upgrade the bridge to meet current needs and make it safe for all that use it. If we do not carry out this work, this popular route could be lost in the future. What does the project involve? The existing bridge deck will be removed completely, including the timber handrails, and replaced with a new steel-concrete deck and new steel handrails. Who is doing the work? Halcrow Group Limited have undertaken a feasibility study of how the bridge could be improved, and designed a scheme to meet the current requirements of the bridge. Jacksons Civil Engineering will be the contractors. How does this affect you? The public footpath (Thames Path) across the bridge will be closed and a diversion route put in place from 22 March 2010 until 15 June 2010. The closure and diversion will operate 24 hours a day for the duration of the work. However, the lock and pedestrian access over the lock gates will be available as normal. We have shown the diversion route on the map enclosed. This diversion will take approximately 20 minutes by foot. We advise cyclists to use Sustrans route 5. We need to close the footpath for the safety of the public due to the nature of the work taking place. The design and construction methods we are using have been chosen to reduce the duration of the work as far as possible. However, a footpath closure is the only way we can keep the public and workforce safe from the hazards of construction equipment and unprotected vertical drops into water. We know this is a well-used public route and regret the inconvenience this footpath closure will cause. We ask for your co-operation whilst this work is taking place, so we can build a new bridge to provide a safe route over the river for many years to come. If you have any questions or comments about this project please do not hesitate to contact me using the details below. Yours faithfully Seevali Surendran Environment Agency Project Manager Swift House Frimley Business Park Camberley, Surrey GU16 7SQ 01276 454 403 seevali.surendran@environment-agency.gov.uk
