The Traffic Survey PointsTwo surveys were taken, each recording the number, direction and speed of the traffic over the seven days between 14 - 21 December 2007.The first recording point was on the Henley Road, by the Catherine Wheel PH (point C on the map below). The second recording point was further along the Henley Road by Orchard House (point D on the map below). The points A and B were from the previous traffic survey taken in 2002.
Note: during the survey dates Oxford United did not have a home match, and the later part of the survey coincided with the start of the Christmas half term holidays. The Data RecordedBoth survey points recorded the speed, direction and the time of each vehicle passing, and these are compiled into two types of report. The "Vehicle Count Report" gives a table of hourly total counts (over the seven days) for the northbound direction, (towards Littlemore) and also a similar table showing the hourly total counts for the southbound direction. The "Speed Summary" gives a table in hourly totals of traffic speed (over five days), again in the northbound and southbound directions, at the two survey points in the village. Point C ResultsThe graph below shows traffic counts for each hour through the week from the 14 - 21 December 2006, as measured on the Henley Road, at a point by the Catherine Wheel public house. The blue line represents traffic traveling north (towards Littlemore) and the red line represents the southbound traffic (towards the A4074 bypass).
The corresponding high red peak only seems to occur over the weekday late afternoon rush hours, with just average flow over the morning periods. Interestingly it appears that right through the week, more traffic travels towards Littlemore than comes the other way not just in the morning peaks (19,737 North, and 14,566 South). Point D ResultsThe graph below shows traffic counts for each hour through the week from the 14 - 21 December 2006, as measured on the Henley Road, at a point by Orchard House. The blue line represents traffic traveling north (towards Littlemore) and the red line represents the southbound traffic (towards the A4074 bypass).
The slightly higher blue peak on Friday morning (towards Littlemore) by Orchard House compared to by the Catherine Wheel (424 to 393) seems to be due to extra vehicles from the Church Road area traveling at this time. However, both graphs strongly indicate that traffic is taking short cut through the village to avoid the weekday morning holdups at the Sainsburys roundabout. Traffic SpeedThe graph below shows the total traffic counts at various speeds, at both survey points, over 15-20 December 2006.The pink line represents traffic travelling north by the Catherine Wheel Public House (point C - towards Littlemore). The red line represents traffic traveling south by the Catherine Wheel Public House (point C - towards the A4074). The turquoise line represents traffic traveling north by Orchard House (point D - towards Littlemore). The blue line represents traffic traveling south by Orchard House (point D - towards the A4074). The speed range along the bottom, is in steps of 5 mph from below 15 mph to over 55 mph. and the yellow line indicates the 30 mph speed limit.
Perhaps these vehicles are slowed by the slight rise in the road level by Church Road, leading up to the Catherine Wheel. However only 86% (1733 out of 2015) of the south bound traffic past the Catherine Wheel, was measured at or below the 30 mph speed limit, and 2 vehicles were measured at over 40 mph. The north bound traffic towards Littlemore, was worse with only 77% (2126 out of 2752) being measured at or below the speed limit, and with 14 vehicles measured at over 40 mph. Traffic travelling past Orchard House, shown by the turquoise and blue lines, have peaks which are further to the right on the graph, suggesting higher speeds in this section of the Henley Road. Traveling south, measurements shown by the blue line, gave only 24% of traffic (513 out of 2136) at or below the speed limit, with 11% (248 out of 2136) of vehicles exceeding 40 mph. Traveling towards Littlemore the traffic shown by the turquoise line, was measured with only 20% (534 out of 2721) at or below the speed limit, 16% (437 out of 2721) measured over 40 mph, and amazingly some 25 vehicles were measured exceeding 50 mph. Unsurprisingly this 'open' section of Henley Road by Orchard House would seem to be an ideal spot for a speed camera! A previous traffic survey was taken in 2002. | ||||||
