Village Appraisal
Comments and Suggestions - section D

With many people having interesting things to say, we have received over 790 comments and suggestions which has resulted in a fairly long list. A reasonable attempt has been sorted them in to the various topic areas contained in the questionnaire. For completeness all comments have been included, even those of a more general nature, but note that some can refer to more than one topic area.
The following sections are given as an index:

  General Information
  Housing & Development
  Working Life
Traffic, Travel & Transport
  Environment
  Village Life
  Young Voices

Each comment also has a "stats" link back to its original question.

SECTION D - Traffic, Travel and Transport

D1. How many cars and vans are normally parked at your address?
Comments
  1. After serious accident to motor cyclist who rode into my car when parked on road outside, I sought an off road space, and was kindly given one by someone on near by housing estate -ONE-
  2. It is a car park. Number varies from 10-50.

D4. Please tick the main modes of transport in your household:
Comments
  1. "Moped"
  2. We have no motor transport
  3. [Data entry note: all options were ticked]
  4. Should be a better Public Transport Service to the City and other areas
  5. We walk a lot at w/ends. Use the Bus for work.
  6. I would use bus if they were more frequent.
  7. Motorbike
Suggestions
  1. No Sunday Service? Local Pickup service to Rosehill? With Approved ID driver Scheme for the young and Female

D5. Speeding vehicles in the village are a routine problem.
Comments
  1. Speed is excessive down and up Church Road, with two accidents at the main corner (into the wall) and many near misses at the river view blind spot.
  2. Traffic speeds up after leaving Littlemore.
  3. "Henley road"
  4. Speed cameras to slow down Traffic. No Speed Humps, they are inconvenient for normal road users. They cause more accidents i.e Littlemore proves this.
  5. 30 mph Signs to remind Drivers of Speed Limit. chicanes and humps more Dangerous
  6. Island and Speed bumps reqd. Traffic has increased from Local Developments
  7. 30MPH signs, have disappeared.???
  8. Speed camera please. stop traffic speeding
  9. Slow down Traffic.1.Students from Heyford Hill Lane to Henley rd.2.Henley rd from Sandford to Littlemore.3.Public Transport u/s for teenagers and Evenings
  10. Speed cameras reqd. Especially under the By-pass bridge cut down noise for Heyford HILL Residents. Humps may reduce speeds near children etc,.
Suggestions
  1. Speed Cameras at either end of the village would help
  2. We need a 20 mph limit.
  3. There are presently no 30mph limit signs through the main village Henley Rd as in most other South Oxford villages they are present every 20-30 metres. Illuminated speeding signs might help.
  4. Speed Cameras to A4074.Add Speed signs and Traffic lights to Heyford Hill R/about
  5. Do they know the Speed Limit. Extra Speed signs reqd.

D6. More traffic management in the village is an urgent requirement.
Suggestions
  1. All football match traffic should not be allowed through the village on match day. Perhaps a resident only sign should be installed at bridge entering village, to direct Science park employees to exit toward Garsington road for the ring road or turn left only at T junction towards B4074.

D7. The Kassam Stadium is causing parking problems in the village.
Comments
  1. Sorry, don't know
  2. "don't know"
  3. We are not happy about Kassam stadium parking in Sandford.
  4. Yellow lines and match days Difficult to park.
Suggestions
  1. Saturday football overflow: Lobbying for better parking facilities at the Kassam or Business Park

D8. Entering and leaving the village is getting more difficult.
Comments
  1. Our roads mean that we are almost on an island if blocked. Already in December 03, an accident at Littlemore blocked 3+pm school traffic and many others from moving at all. (27.01.04) Today at approx 10am a traffic jam caused the run from south end of Henley rd on A4074 to take 20mins? Cause
  2. "but from the roundabout"
  3. parking in Heyford Hill lane obscures vision/cause accidents at Junctions.2/Traffic calming at Railway Bridge dangerous.3/speeding Vehicles make junction dangerous
Suggestions
  1. Block the Slip rd access, Reading rd to prevent use of village as a Through Road
  2. Stop/Block rat runs through the Village by commuters
  3. Upper Henley rd be closed at junction of dual carriageway. New slip rd constructed at the bridge of Kiln lane. Upper Henley rd being used as Main Trunk rd from Village and BMW lorries via Leisure complex in Grenoble Rd
  4. If Henley rd was made a One-way system. It would may deter commuters to use the Ring rd, instead of using the Village as a Rat run
  5. Find alternative route to take away traffic from Village

D9. Space needs to be found for more off street car parking.
Comments
  1. Parking on grass verges has not been addressed. This is a major problem around the pubs and parts of Henley Road
  2. The Kassam stadium and leisure centre should have adequate parking for all customers and not impinge on the village at all.
  3. "at STADIUM"
  4. Keep cars off the Pavements. Significant excess of Parking on Match days
  5. Get rid of Yellow Lines. Install Speed cameras
  6. Yellow Lines Bad idea. Have to park on grass verge as people park o/s our house
  7. too many people in small Village. Traffic and Parking probs. Get rid of Yellow Lines
  8. Car parked on Verges! Need Traffic calming. Humps or Speed Cameras
  9. Why do the Council allow garages to be altered to Accommodation
Suggestions
  1. Too much Traffic. Humps and Mini r/about reqd At Church rd/Henley rd
  2. Village is now a Rat Run. Pedestrian Bridge reqd from Heyford Hill lane over the River

D10.More pedestrian crossings in our area of the village are not necessary.
Comments
  1. Zebra crossing along Sandford Road.
Suggestions
  1. We need a pedestrian crossing over Henley Road near or between the bus stops.

D11. The bus service as currently timetabled is excellent
Comments
  1. Limited options exist for increasing available local work but improved transport for those working in Oxford will be an advantage
  2. Improve the bus service.
  3. Love the buses!!
  4. We would appreciate improved bus service particularly Sunday & evenings
  5. It the transport management within Oxford were better conceived / managed the issue of where you worked would cease to be an issue. Public transport must be cheaper so that cars would not be used to get to work, and it would make more economic sense to go to work by bus. Ban all cars from entering Oxford that would do the trick - more park & ride schemes are needed and add a toll for driving cars within the ring road. Get cars OUT of Oxford otherwise it will lead to grid lock. Maybe BUS ONLY roads eg Iffley
  6. No service to Oxford early evening, otherwise much better than before
  7. Now that the bus is every 30 minutes makes travelling by bus more attractive to use.
  8. "quite good"
  9. Bus Services need to improve
  10. No Sunday Buses
  11. The bus service is inadequate at one an hour.
  12. Respondent crossed out 'excellent' and replaced it with 'good'.
  13. The bus service has improved but more buses at rush hour will only result in greater congestion at The Plain at the end of Iffley Road, so this needs sorting out first. Abingdon Road is just as bad.
  14. The lack of direct bus services in the evening is a disincentive to use public transport.
  15. THE Bus service does not answer the requirements of many by not going to Cowley centre which is our local shopping centre
  16. Not enough buses out of normal hours eg late in the evening and Sundays.
Suggestions
  1. The bus service to Sandford should be improved, especially on Sundays.
  2. Bus service - it would be good to include 105 busses into Oxford until 8pm and on or two late buses from Oxford at 11.30 and midnight too for people who want to spend an evening in Oxford.
  3. Early evening Bus service reqd at 19.30pm
  4. Better Bus Service to run later, if more Houses to be built
  5. Better Bus service after 1900hrs reqd
  6. Bus Service reqd after 1900hrs please. Its so remote
  7. Better evening/late night bus service
  8. the bus service finishes around 6pm but this is too early for people spending the evening in the city. The service needs to carry on until 11pm at the earliest
  9. Buses need evenings and Sundays
  10. A bus service that runs into the centre of Oxford after 5pm.

D12. I would welcome a bus to take me to a superstore.
Comments
  1. I don't, but lots do
  2. "there is one to Tescos"
  3. Need for a Bus Service to Cowley. Bus to Superstore YES
  4. If superstore bus went round village to houses then Yes.

D13. If trains were to stop here again, I would use them.
Comments
  1. Depend where the trains are going to!
  2. To go where?
  3. If trains went to Oxford and/or London then yes.

D14. If cycle lanes were extended through Sandford, I would cycle more.
Comments
  1. Cycle anyway, but cycle lanes are always good
  2. "quite impracticable"
  3. No need for Cycle lanes. They use the Paths?
Suggestions
  1. Cycle routes should be improved.
  2. We do have to think of transport in terms other than individual motor cars - publicity, linked transport ??? ??? of the river perhaps, off the road cycle tracks eg. one in to Oxford City are good idea.

D15. There are traffic 'danger spots' in our area of the village.
Comments
  1. People speed down church road - especially outsiders making use of the King's Arms. The start of my property is on a double bend and cars have twice gone straight into my neighbour's wall. I am frightened as a result to let my 7 year old cross the road to play in the park.
  2. By the shop
  3. When turning from Pheasant walk into Heyford Hill Lane, cars parked on the L.H.S. cause a dangerous blind spot.
  4. Cars parked on the L.H.S. of the road near the Littlemore roundabout cause traffic problems.
  5. Church Rd / Henley Rd is a bad junction.
  6. Henley Rd area
  7. Worn or no marks or signs from side entrance Henley rd
  8. Caused by on street parking
  9. No more Bulk Building in and around the Village
  10. Put White lines each side of Entrances
  11. Hedges at 91,93,and 95 Henley rd, block vision whilst attempting to drive onto r/way from driveway. Council cannot/will not take notice.
  12. R/about reqd Brick kiln Lane/Henley Rd due to 2006 Project increased Traffic from 1000 homes Grenoble rd. pedestrian crossings reqd. Danger spots I.e. Church rd /Henley rd. Extra Lighting reqd with White lines at sharp bends in Lower Church rd.
  13. Footpaths are bad
  14. Dangerous bend between hotel and Heyford Hill Lane with Speeding motorists.
  15. Traffic seems to speed from the lights on the Henley road. People tend to use the village as a shortcut to avoid traffic queues on the by-pass. I have nearly been run over several times when people ignore the lights by the pedestrian crossing in Littlemore.
Suggestions
  1. On the corner of Church road and River View, there are sharp bends, need a mirror here so approaching traffic can be seen.
  2. Henley rd junction with Heyford Hill lane have had numerous accidents. Must have a Go Slow signs
  3. Pheasant Walk/Heyford Hill lane junction. Traffic lights on Bridge? Pheasant walk cul de sac into Pheasant Walk
  4. Church rd in Bad state. Pot holes, you have to swerve to avoid them. Dangerous Blind corner. Mirror and Blind spot Signs reqd. Those at the Mill, often speed

D16. Village roads are in a good state of repair.
Comments
  1. Park Homes road needs major work
  2. The council should provide more money for path and road repairs and maintenance, and carry it out. Church Road is a total disgrace
  3. Church rd particularly full of pot holes Henley Rd starting to be likewise. Many pavements very poor.
  4. Numerous requests have been made for the surface of Church Road to be properly resurfaced - but only pot holes are filled in. Perhaps the heavy vehicles delivering to the King Arms and farm tractors contribute to the damage.
  5. What about the footpaths? These are in a sorry state. Henley Rd between Heyford Hill Lane and Church Rd could be narrowed, widening the paths. This will force cars to be driven slower as well.
  6. pot holes
Suggestions
  1. Need more street lighting
  2. Within Oxf. Park Homes the roads need major works - straightening, surfacing, signage, drainage etc
  3. Treat T Junctions with Anti Skid type surface. To prevent excessive wheel spinning

D17. Please rank your preferences for traffic management. From 1, most down to 5, least for as many as you wish.
Comments
  1. I experience few traffic problems
  2. This begs the question that there is a NEED for traffic management
  3. None of these
  4. "don't know"
  5. Gates - like Chistlehampton & Numeham Courtenay?
  6. [Data entry note: "Mini Roundabout" changed to read "Roundabouts"]
  7. Littlemore chicanes are already a pain in the neck, on the other hand the extension to the 30 mph limit throughout Sandford has proved beneficial.
  8. [Comment added to 1 Way Henley Rd] Most through traffic from the Reading Road causes the problems, the question is how do we prevent motorists from using Sandford as a way into Oxford??? And seducing them to avoid the village period. They should be going up to H.Hill roundabout --> Oxford!
  9. Corner Church rd. See Parish Councils current plan to slow traffic.
  10. Should include 'speed cameras' which would have been in my top 3 choices
  11. "we already have chicanes and humps"
  12. Crossing Brick Kiln Rd/Henley Rd by foot is very risky. Need for a Mini-/about .Cars coming up from Br/Kiln Lane to turn left do not give way to Traffic on Henley Rd.
  13. Traffic Management may deter Traffic from using the Village as rat run
  14. Chicanes and Alternating Priorities be well lit and Sign Posted
  15. Traffic Calming in a SENSIBLE fashion, Chicanes can be more dangerous if not enough Signs. Look at Littlemore.
  16. What Traffic Restrictions, HGVs thro Village. Kassam Traffic on Match days cause blocked Driveways. Littlemore and Minchery farm have Parking restrictions, but not Sandford??
  17. Excess road Traffic noise and Pollution. Who is interested in changing this.
  18. Problems in the Village, due to Increased Traffic after altering Roads(narrower).Do not use Village Hall Car Park to resolve problems with Parking.
  19. Plenty of Housing Developments in Oxford.? Why does the Village need to become a Town!
  20. 1 Way Henley Rd and Gates options are absolutely ridiculous.
  21. The traffic calming priority scheme on the railway bridge needs to be drastically re-thought. Having lived in this area for over ten years I have never heard of any accidents on this bridge or either side of it. Singe the construction of the traffic calming there have been at least a dozen accidents varying from people ploughing straight into the islands to head on crashes.
  22. Current chicanes/humped crossings through Littlemore lead to increased pollution and congestion (and probably accidents). Speed cameras would be welcome.
  23. The traffic at school times is terrible. People park where they shouldn't and block the road.
  24. more road signs needed between 4 pillars and Heyford hill lane as speed limit is not clear there
  25. mini roundabout at junction of brick kiln lane and Henley road
Suggestions
  1. Speed Cameras
  2. We should encourage transport other than the car!!
  3. Henley Rd speeding: Flashing speed signs as in Stadhampton least disruptive
  4. I am not aware that there are any pressing traffic issues. A more frequent bus service may encourage more people to leave cars at home. A more local school would also help.
  5. Compared to most of Oxford, Sandford is a dream! I'm very wary of building more & more structures on the road. Some of my worse near-misses have been at the alternating right of ways through Littlemore. Village gates are good, because they are psychological reminder, defining us as a village, rather than houses on a lovely sweep of road.
  6. Also we need to stop the village being used as a "rat run", we need to look at "Access Only"
  7. We need two roundabouts (not mini ones) at the junction of Brick Kiln Lane & Rock Farm Lane. Also the insertion of a speed humps at each end of the village. All these will disrupt the speed of vehicles.
  8. We need speed cameras at each end of the village set at 32 mph
  9. Defiantly should be speed humps & personally I think the priority is good for traffic flow, alternating it may help slow down traffic
  10. Speed controls
  11. More speed limit signs
  12. Yellow lines throughout Henley Road and Heyford Hill Lane.
  13. Discourage parking on verges. Put in access only signs. Local traffic only signs at Rose Hill and Science Park roundabouts. 30mph repeater signs. I would like to see cars and bicycles off the pavements. It would be disappointing to see humps, chicanes etc., that would make the village look like a car manufacturer's test track.
  14. Football and Ozone traffic northbound should be sent to Sainsbury's roundabout and then south to junction.
  15. Take away narrowings, they have caused more accidents.
  16. Please no humps or chicanes like Littlemore - they cause more problems than they prevent. A sign that illuminates if you exceed 30mph would be useful on Henley Rd - they seem to work in nearby places. Exiting Church Rd is much improved since double yellow lines have been on the Henley Rd.

D18. Traffic problems (if any) in the village are caused by: Please number your top three.
Comments
  1. I very much dislike the cars that are regularly parked on double yellow lines and on grass verges
  2. This question is biased as it does not give a definition - generally agreed or not - of what is meant by a "traffic problem"
  3. The stupid give ways near Littlemore hospital [data entry note: this comment was added and ranked as their number 1]
  4. Poor road state & Poor junctions - Park Homes
  5. "don't know"
  6. The footpath crossing the 1st roundabout on Grenoble road to the Park Home has no warning to oncoming traffic, in fact traffic from the village is allowed to speed up before the crossing, making it rather dangerous.
  7. Speed along Henley Road is a problem. Good clear speed allowance signs please, would help.
  8. [Data entry note: "Kassam traffic" added to 'Village Visitors']
  9. Through traffic at peak times by non-residents
  10. School run Mums (Dads) picking up & dropping off is chaotic.
  11. Apart from the parking of football fans on match days I really feel there are no traffic problems.
  12. I see no problems & I drive every day
  13. Bad driving
  14. Joy riders and BMW lorries using Junction of Brick Kiln Lane and Henley rd. Anti-skid and weight restrictions reqd
  15. My "1" goes to "attempted traffic management".
  16. football visitors mainly
  17. Planning regulations allow new estate roads to be too narrow so that on-street parking is dangerous. Property driveways are often too short to accommodate more than one vehicle.
  18. The road state is particularly poor in Church Rd: potholes on the bends force traffic into the curve of the road and into the pathway of other traffic. I have seen a couple of near misses as a consequence.
  19. Sandford is a rat run in the rush hour. Gates and alternate priorities might reduce that. The ring road and Iffley road to the chastic plain roundabout ditto the cowley road, make mass housing in the green belt sheer madness. It would be development deliberately over looking already over stressed infrastructure. The very expensive city traffic surveys prove this
  20. Suggested that the road humps caused problems they ranked this with a 3.
  21. Kassam stadium needs to have its own adequate parking facilities and match traffic should be directed away from the main village. (ie off A4074 onto Grenoble road)
  22. Need to devise scheme to discourage non-village users of Grenoble road from using Henley road as a rat run.
  23. I'm not aware of any traffic problems at present as we only moved to the village Nov 03.
  24. Make Henley road much narrower in keeping with a village road, rather than the main Oxford - Henley road it used to be. It is more than twice as wide as need be in places. The space saved can be given over to grass offering a great visual improvement. A narrow road will slow traffic down.
  25. Young teens on scooters are a nuisance.
  26. The Heyford hill junction is woefully inadequate for the volume of traffic it generates.
  27. It is very difficult to pull out of Broadhurst Gardens into Heyford hill lane. There is always a lot of parked cars along the lane. Some are on the road and some half on and half on the pavement. Some very close to the junction so blocking the view down the lane. Perhaps a mirror at the junction might aid the drivers coming out of Broadhurst Gardens.
  28. Either side of Broadhurst Garden junction three people with Volvo estates block the view to traffic on Heyford hill lane.
  29. Thinks that humps and chicanes are dangerous and ranks them as top traffic problem.
  30. The volume of traffic at peak times has increased greatly over the past few years; increased frequency of speed has also become a problem and increases risk. There is a need to slow traffic down in some way - even though many do drive safely.
  31. The biggest problem seems to be visitors cars and visitors to the football stadium.
  32. Losing laybys are a less intrusive place to park cars.
  33. Traffic speed and excessive parking are my major concerns. But congestion due to school traffic in Littlemore also causes problems
Suggestions
  1. Volume of traffic and the speed that it travels has increased significantly, gates or signs to remind people that they are entering a village and 30 mph signs rather than humps or chicanes
  2. [Note added to 'Poor Junctions'] "alternating priority on bridge"
  3. Roundabout at the top of Brick Kiln Lane will help junction as well as slowing traffic
  4. Cars go through the 30mph speed limit a lot of the time towards Littlemore. There should be more police checks to educate people
  5. Use wide paths to south end of Henley Road as parking bays.
  6. Access to Science Park from Sandford is not good - the roundabout etc act as a real barrier. More cycle/pedestrian friendly route would be of benefit.
  7. Gritting at Broadhurst gardens is essential when ice or snow is on the road.
  8. Speed humps that restrict to 25-30mph I would favour, plus a more obvious 30mph limit.
  9. The flashing 30mph signs that have appeared in Chislehampton are also excellent.
  10. A pedestrian crossing slows people driving through.

D19. Do you experience the following parking problems at your home? Please tick all those that apply.
Comments
  1. Blocked pathways around the entrance to Rock Farm Lane due to people from the manor house and resident near the entrance thinking they have the right to park on the pavement. This is very dangerous.
  2. If I have several visitors at a time, parking is difficult and therefore it is necessary to park on Heyford Hill Lane in order not to encroach on neighbours spaces.
  3. The only parking problems we have are on 'Aunt Sally' nights at the Fox... not exactly desperate.
  4. "Nowhere to park" for two cars per house, as most have that.
  5. In our area of the village the main problem is due to the fact that most households own more than one car, and they only have access to one parking space, consequently visitors car spaces are used by residents; so if you happen to have any visitors they have to go and park at the pub.
  6. Parked vehicles at junction causing poor visibility when houses have plenty of off street parking which is not utilised. Especially a problem when exiting Broadhurst Gardens onto HH Lane.
  7. I have allocated parking. Nothing allocated for visitors.
  8. none. I am very lucky
  9. Some people don't use their allocated parking in the car parks and park outside their house/flat instead causing the roads to be hard to pass at times.
  10. None of the above but football traffic can cause problems
  11. No parking for visitors.
  12. NO VISITORS PARKING AT MOBILE HOME PARK
  13. stop football parking
  14. Exiting Broadhurst Gardens into Heyford Hill lane residents park close to our exit and so we can't see traffic coming either way.
  15. Where house/people have drives/off road parking they should be encouraged to use it rather than blocking pathways. On match days more traffic restrictions enforcement is necessary.
  16. Parking near corners, particularly at busy junctions, are a hazard. Eg junction at Heyford hill lane and Broadhurst gardens, Heyford hill lane and Sandford road. All around Broadhurst gardens in the bends.
  17. We have off road parking and a dropped kerb in front of our gates, which is generally respected when people park outside our house
  18. Church road can be busy on days of special services but this is to be expected by a church.
  19. More lighting in car parking areas. If car park in Broadhurst Gardens which was attracting youths with drugs and alcohol to hang around. Residents paid for a gate to be out up to stop this. Council should provide security in these areas not the residents
Suggestions
  1. For the parking problem - Residential Parking Zones
  2. Strongly opposed to parking on grass verges ie. Janaway, Henley Rd. Solution being periphery is lined with aesthetically pleasing obstacles eg. Logs, Boulders.
  3. The pavements on Henley Rd are wide: parking laybys might encourage better parking.
  4. need a large car park for visitors extra vehicles etc. Are only allowed one car on each plot. This is urgent
  5. Winter months Broadhurst Gardens needs to be gritted because the hill becomes a sheet of glass and residents can't get out.
